Postmodern Indian music?
Hiya,
I'm wondering if you guys can point me over to any postmodern music a la India-style? You know the kind: genre-hopping, dis (and re) orienting beats, eclectic combinations of sound, a blend of old and new, east and west (either within India or in a broader sense)... Would love to hear your thoughts! Have there been any films that could be classified as postmodern that you might know about too? ![]() Take care, Fifi |

the boys in the little restaurant that I ate in regularly all winter in Arambol played a couple of CD's so regularly, I eventually got to like the odd fusion sounds and rythems and recorded them on my iBook one night -- unfortunately the data part didn't show up, so do not have much info. Best of Talvin Singh is one which I like very much though. Another I just have labled as 'Karunesh' which is pretty good as well. I Googled both, and there are some samples on the Talvin Singh site here:

In the Caribbean, Indian film music is remade with a soca beat (like calypso)--it's actually pretty cool. Look for anything categorized at "chutney soca."
For postmodern Indian film, try "Boom," which is set in Mumbai and Dubai, as three runway models (including Padma Lakshmi) try to double cross a drug boss whose diamonds they have inadvertently lost. Amitabh Bachchan plays a kingpin in Dubai. It's a dreadful movie, but over the top in a different way from most Indian movies. |

Shankar Mahadevan, apart from having perhaps the most gifted voice in India at the moment, is also very hip with his instrumental backgrounds, yet never strays too far from Indian roots.

Buddha Bar has created a lot of controversy in SL. I think it is banned or something as it hurt the Buddhist religious sentiments. (News link)

(i see nothing offensive in putting Buddha's image on a CD or at the restaurant - this is not the same as putting hindu gods on bikinis! i also doubt if any of the devoted and hard practising Buddhists that could be offended ever get anywhere near buying a Buddha Bar CD in Colombo or drinking at Buddha Bar in Paris) some people (like me) get to know Buddha Bar before they get to know Buddha Gautama.it is curious to see how Buddhism "works" as the majority religion in a country... see also this can someone explain to me what " postmodern music" means? |

Thank you!
Guys, thanks so much for your insights and suggestions...
As to what postmodern music is: Postmodern music generally resists one definitive genre/sound. Postmodern music consumers prefer eclectic arrangements, which might bring together two genres rarely intended to be played together, subvert the musical conventions, be it the verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge dynamic, lyrical play or any aspect of music. Mash ups come to mind - if you have p2p you can download "Smells Like Teen Booty", which features the lyrics of "Bootilicious" from destiny's child to the music of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Or perhaps Eminem's "Without Me" lyrics over Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever" music. Mashes challenge traditional notions of authorship, and from fusing two 'old' songs a new one is made. Those Hindu bikinis were pretty postmodern! I actually thought they were a great idea... why not let everyone celebrate their beliefs in ways that suits them? Piff |

Check out Nitin Sawney and Talvin Singh
Both have been at the vaguard of the new wave of British Indians who are developing a unique fusion of Indian and western music. here are many others whose names escape me at the moment Bryan

Saaz how do you rate them????
Saaz are are a couple of musicians/band I got into on my last trip to India.
The first track I heard was Dil Ko Sukoon and it blew me away, great foot tapping strings and vocals!! I posted this band a few weeks ago and it certainly fits the genre of music your looking for. Lovely traditional sitar, accompanied by, wonderful devotional style singing. The other guy brings Rajastheni folk, blues and jazz to the mix as he jams on the guitar. The result a energetic mix of sitar/Jazz and lyrics to dream to!! I was rather suprised that none of our Indian members had anything to say on this group? I came across them via MTV asia (which rather suggests someone is buying the CD's, not that in itself means anything!), c'mon you guys are they worth listening to or are they too watered down, too commercial, too Indian, or have I just got a really cheesy taste in music!! Apparently the sitar player has quite a pedigree in India's music elite??? I couldn't find anything on the internet about the band so if there are any fans out there? Links would be nice! All of you IMr's have a listen I think you'll "enjoy" ![]() Last edited by cyberhippie : Jun 15th, 2004 at 21:16. |

Try also Dj Cheb I Sabbah, State Of Bengal, and Midival Punditz.
For a good compilation try Anokha or Essential Asian Flavas. |
