please help: words for music

hi..i don't really know in which section i should ask my question, but i'll try here.
For a long time i've been thinking about getting a tattoo and i have just two things really clear...I want it to be a word writen in hindi, and it has to have a meaning related to music...but i just can't find anyone to translate any words
I would really really really appreciate if someone could help me with this by writing words related to music..
please do not put words with other meanings as a joke because this is something i really want
thank you!

If you want words translated in Hindi, post them here.

Or do you just want, generally, Hindi words related to music?

each one of them means 'music'. The first one is probably most commonly used, and is most accurate.

The others mean 'music' too, but they can have different meanings too, mostly connected with music

Raaga or Raag, or

राग

is actually Sanskrit for, I think 'colouring '. Also used in the musical context to mean a melody usually conforming to some basic rules. (colouring the mind with melody)

It is a synonym for 'music', but has some other meanings too- at least to my limited knowledge.

Raga is the melodic structure of Indian music.

At its most simple, raga could be understood as scale. You could say that Western music has two basic ragas; the major and minor scales. They sound different because the spacing of the notes, the intervals, are different.

In western music, the difference between major and minor is the difference in the placing of one note.

In Indian music there are hundreds of ragas ---
  • a raga may include all seven notes, or fewer.
  • the music is microtonal, in one raga a given note may be a fraction sharper or flatter than in another.
  • the order of the notes up and down the scale in a particular raga may not be linear; it may be specified that certain notes are only approached from certain other notes
  • the scale may be different on the way up and on the way down
  • certain notes in a particular raga will be chosen for gamuka, grace notes will be attached before or after the note
That's off the top of my head, and about the totality of my knowledge (I don't use the word understanding ).

The partner of raga is laya: rhythm

err, both of them also can mean music. As I indicated earlier, they have other meanings, too.

To a musician, raga is melody, laya is rhythm.

The word raga is also used as a synonym for the alap, or alapana (Southern): the section of a performance which is an improvised presentation of the raga.

One of the best books on sailing I ever read began with words to the effect: Put this book down immediately, go and spend some time sailing a boat. Only then come back and read the book.

Although people make a great intellectual pursuit about Indian music, especially here in the South, I think it is better listened too!

But then, perhaps if I knew more....
