Picture Books
Hi there
After visiting India recently I would now like to buy some picture books as a reminder of what I saw. I am particularly interested in finding one about Varanasi, photographing life on the ghats etc. Does anyone have any recommendations? I have looked on the Phaidon website, they have a couple by Mr R Singh, but not specifically on Varanasi. Any other photography book recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks |

I've seen a big book at the Bangalore airport bookshop. The name was 'The colours of India 'or something like that. Cost about 2000rs (all photo books are expensive
), may be becouse of the paper quality, low volume sale etc Also there is very nice Hindi pop song too which was fully shot at Varanasi ghats & gallies. Some one name that too please. |

The big book on Varanasi is "End Time City" by Michael Ackerman--spooky, rough black and white photos, very haunting.
Aperture did a big collection of photography from India in 1996, "India: A Celebration of Independence." There are shots of Varanasi from Raghu Rai and Mary Ellen Mark. Raghubir Singh did a big book on the Ganges, but it's hard to find. His "River of Color" is an excellent selection from most of his books and is readily available, if you are just looking for a general book on India. |

Don McCullin's book

You'll find lots of copies in the local public libraries. Take a look there and then decide whether you want to buy them. He's good. very good. & British to boot. I believe beach was referring to River of Colour: The India of Raghubir Singh; http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...842937-2839805 |

Thanks for all of these, I will start researching and see which ones I like.
I was particularly interested in "Banares: The Sacred City of India by Raghubir Singh" and you were right Beach, it does seem hard to get hold of. He has another one called "The Ganges" so I think I will check that one out. All the other books above mentioned ring a bell, as I saw them all in bookshops in India, but didn't fancying lugging them around in my bag pack, plus they were same price. Does anyone know of an Indian bookshop in London? |

I have "river of colors" and it's one of my favorite books. I find myself going back to it time and time again. another book with much about Varanasi and the Ganges is
"XXX [30] Holy Journeys into the Spiritual Heart of India" by Bialobrzeski which you can get at good discounts. These are all dream like photos, with blurred figures with scenes from the theatre of Indian spiritual life. It’s a book I grew into and learnt to appreciate very much over time. |
