Phrase Books
Hi all,
Does anyone have a recommendation for a Hindi Phrase Book? I have heard the Lonely Planet one isn't that great. Does anyone recommend the Rough Guide phrase book or any other suggestions? This is something I want to slowly learn and pick up over time. I don't have the time at the moment to attend classes so for now I am keen to get a phrase book. Thanks, Freebird |

The Rough Guide phrase book is OK for the basics, but I don't think it will help you much in 'slowly learning the language'. There are quite limited phrases in it and a lot of it is just a Hindi/English dictionary (also very limited) which is fine for basic words, but doesn't really help you with sentence construction. I would recommend 'Beginner's Hindi' by Rupert Snell if you really want to teach yourself Hindi. I bought it recently (along with the accompanying CD) and although I haven't made much use of it yet, it seems like a much better learning tool. Also, the Rough Guide phrasebook wont teach you the Devangari script. Good luck!

& don't EVER
buy those wretched books 'Learn X in 30 days' where X is Hindi/Tamil/Bengali etc. These books which will remind you of the useless nature of trying to learn a langauge just from books.
It won't have phrases like... 'Where is the railway station?' Where is the loo?' but it will certainly have phrases like... 'Michael is climbing a tree' ' The color of the car is blue' which I dare say will be of utmost use to you! The bright side, the book is very cheap about Rs 20-30. -- |

I was quite happy with my Lonely Planet Hindi & Urdu Phrasebook last year.
It's not quite expensive either, so I would go for it This year I'm going to the south, but I haven't found a descent Tamil phrasebook yet ![]() |

I agree with EricD, have always relied and enjoyed using the Lonely Planet series and guide books. They have the most interesting phrases in there that's not offered by other series, I actually collect them and read'em for fun or suprise people with phrases they don't expect a foreigner to know.
