Talking Parinita

The movie rocks

Bollywood at it's best to de bollywoodize a fantastic cast. But somehow they failed somewhere....with that uncalled for wedding dance? or with the melodramatic end part?

Over all a nice movie.

Good movie. The wedding dance sequence was not needed but okay since it was more of a backdrop. The melodramatic ending was a bit boring and unromantic - but without it the movie would not have been a Bollywood production - it would have been a Tollywood (film production centre in Calcutta) masterpiece.

Ok, I did not like that first wedding party dance (un called for), then it's a bit slow in the first hour....otherwise , i like it. alright, it depends on the taste. This is based on a popular bengali novel. I remember someone earlier posted a link here to the movie's site...could not search and find it out....

I have to say that this was the most satisfying BW movie I have watched in the past year or two. It is indeed the most beautiful to watch and the editing is GREAT. Do you know how one thinks how a BW movie could be shaved by at least 30 minutes? Well the editor shaves this one by 40 minutes and make the movie run along at a pace where I was never bored.

The setting is a lovingly rendered nostalic movie-tone Cal, circa 1962. It was as if the lush settings of SLB's Devdas had been trasposed to a more naturally acted "real" setting. The clothes are beautiful. I totally see this movie winning all the Filmfare awards in the technical departments of, sets, costume, editing, photography, lighting, script even.

The actress who is a debutante in her first film, Vidya Balan, is amazing. The BEST debut in 10 years !!! The Rekha "item number" is a hoot and was soo much fun!

I say go see the movie. I was transpoted for 2 hours. (I'm sure some Bengali's have issues with the movie. Then again, when did a Bengali NOT have an "issue" or strong opinion, on anything intellectual?"

BEAUTIFUL MOVIE. ***** stars

Are any of the dance scenes in the bollywood movies called for?

Hey, I am a bengali and I have no issues with the movie - I thoroughly enjoyed it. The only scene that I felt could have been better handled was the climax. And I am not talking about anything "intellectual" - I am wondering if a little more subtlety in visualising the last scene could in fact make it much more romantic and memorable?

Actually this very first "wedding dance" scene is the only song picturization that has really filmi elements added to it. All the other song picturizations come without the usual dancing around trees and the swiss alps.

Well the Rekha item dance is a full blown "cabaret" number done in the spirit of Helen cabaret dance numbers from the real 1960s. But it comes as feeling almost "naturalistic" in the storyline as it takes place in a nightclub.

Yes I agree with you. At the climax half of the audience in the theater was mockingly "yelling" along with the people on the screen. The climax turned out to be funny instead of dramatic half of the time too. It was still great all the same.

Sanjay Dutt was great too !!!

It's a hindi film and songs and dances are integral to almost all films - However it is a beautifully made film with some superb acting by all the actors. The climax is a bit overdone but overall the movie leaves you very satisfied. Go watch it!!

Black - Parineeta..... waiting for another well crafted movie!

Of course ! So many! There are many great dance numbers in Bollywood films and all these are relevant. Watch "Guide", "Paakezah", "Umrao Jaan", etc. Waheeda Rehman, Hema Malini, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Vyjayantimala were great classical dancers. Helen was a great cabaret dancer too. Rekha wasn't bad, either.

Also watch some of V.Shantaram's movies starring Sandhya - some great dances there too.

Something common to all of the above save Helen...they are all from Tamil Nadu (Yeah Waheeda too)...woud that be a reason ?

Parineeta

Finally watched the movie. I was more than prepared to rave about it, but unfortunately, i was dissapointed. I am dissapointed in Vidu Vinod Chopra. He can certainly do better than this. And I am not even getting into the usual, it is different from the book debate. I haven't read the book, so I took the story at face value, and I must say, to say the very least, that it was rather shallow. Actually, I was giving myself excuses almost till the end of the movie, trying desparately to like it, but finally with the climax, I had no excuses left. It was just plain bollywood style drama. It lacked authenticity. For heaven's sake, polka dots belonged to the 70s not the 60s! I mean, real classics are not made because one fine day you wake up and make them. Even if you were to hold a mirror to your face, that mirror has to belong to the era. That is the stuff of classics. Maybe, it was my expectation, that this would be a classic, that was at fault. If you are not expecting class and style, then well, i guess it's your usual run of the mill nice hindi movie. But, i repeat, I have found Vidu Vinod Chopra to be an extremely conscientious film maker in the past, but this movie was dissapointing. Of course, he wasn't the director, but even so... Well, credit must be given where it is due. Divya Balan did some intelligent acting. The rest were usual. And Saif, please leave the ripping out fountains and tubewells to Sunny pa ji. You looked good enough playing the piano shirtless, but there are limits to streatching credibility. To end this on a good note, Rekha was a bomb. She still has more oomph than most underdressed 16 year olds.

Yes, I know that's short review by my standards,
but I have a lot of work today,
or I would have written a nice long one.
