I'm a disliker, Too much wailing.
And my number-one in music is Southern Indian classical. I like Hinustani too. But Quuwali is too much for me.

Have to be in the mood for it, but Qawwali is often one of my favorites.
I first heard of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan through a tribute album called Star Rise. I totally recommend it and then moved on to several other recordings. The most recent one was Swan Song and wow it is amazing. Nick-H I'm not sure that I would know Southern Classical when I hear it. What do you recommend? |

Star Rise is a remix album. i am not sure how good that is. but in general remix kills the original song. nusrat may have allowed remix as like everyone, he also needed money, but i am sure he wouldn't have felt happy about it.

You say remix, I say tribute, whatever.
![]() It is actually very good for what it is. It is very different, but for those not familiar with Qawwali it can serve as a nice introduction. And it is more dancy/electronic so it isn't quite so jarring on my iPod when put on certain party playlists. If you know what I mean. |

but make sure that you gradually expose others in that "party" to the real stuff. real Nusrat goes really well... I guess Tavleen singh is also a regular fixture in those parties |

Just picked up Night Song thanks to the Captain's revelation in another thread as to the mystery artist on "City of Djinns" soundtrack(Dalrymple's documentary). Some very intense feeling put into a few of those tracks ...... definitely recommended.
.....Canadian content on this CD as well!

we use to do this 20+ minute version in a car with friends, like the Bohemian Rhapsody by queen in Wayne's World down southall high street with heads wobbling instead of banging when we were young those were the days! watching and hearing him live was awesome.Last edited by kpnuts : Aug 30th, 2007 at 15:55. |

I have since logtime "Love Songs" by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Party.
I must be in a very particular mood to hear it. Normally I donīt enjoy his music, is loud and screeching at the same time. Jorge |

Nusrat goes with Sufi ethos.
One without an understanding of the other is like Pizza without the jalapeno; good enough, but could be better. Peak, glad you liked Night Song.

nomad, maybe Peak can do that, coz I can't remember
But, in the excellent BBC production of City of Djinns by Dalrymple, this plays in the background, and is haunting. It is Michael Brook and Nusrat. sorry, no idea of itunes http://www.amazon.com/Night-Song-Nus.../dp/B000000HPH you can listen to a sample there, they say. |
