MOVIE: The Rising: PT 1 Mangal Pandey

So finally after almost 4 long years of waiting "The Rising" is finally coming to the big screen Aug 12th. This is Part One of a trilogy of films. So the film is called "The Rising: The Ballad of Mangal Pandey" .

Here is the link to the official web site:
http://www.risingthefilm.com/

I think that the rising films may cause a new interest in travel to these historical sites that were important to the great Mutiny of 1857? So this is a thread about not just the movie, but also the historical places that the Rising films take place at.

That is the story I have heard, its going to be a three part 5 hour series.

"There will be three episodes to Ketan Mehta's The Rising starring Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherjee and Amisha Patel. The film revolving around the life of freedom fighter Mangal Pandey, set against the backdrop of the 1857 mutiny, will have two follow-ups films of 100 minutes each. The first follow-up will focus on the last Moghul Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar while the second is woven around the queen of Jhansi - Rani Laxmi Bai. These films would be a continuation in showcasing the fight for Indian independence against the British government."

Was the Rani of Jhansi a figure in the indian independence movement ? From what I have read her fight was more to do with the right to adopt a successor.

Tantia Tope I could understand.

The movie was screened at Locarno (Swiss) Film Festival and there is a review in the Hollywood Reporter. I can scan it and post it here if you like. Its listed with a running time of 150 mins and no mention of sequels.

Yes the Rani of Jhansi is one of the major symbols of the Mutiny of 1857. There was a very large rebellion at the Jhansi fort, and many English and Indians were killed.
There are many links on the web telling the story. The escape of Rani of Jhansi with her child and her death in battle are huge in the story of the Mutiny.

It's Govinda from the movie Dariya Dil

Can The Rising live up to the expectations ?? that's the big question.
Here is a great article talking about the movie, the mutiny, and the historical Mangal Pandey .

Saw it today ..

I just saw Mangal Pandey - The Rising today .. good stuff !

However Mangal Pandey in this movie is shown as "Indian Freedom struggle" type of guy. He was more like budding Congress politician . I wonder if that was the real truth ? It looks like a bit of a Congress propoganda film.

But the film still does not match up to Hollywood historicals. I hoped to see magnificient Indian battle scenes - with Elephants, horses and stuff but not there !

as to the sites in India where the events of 1857 took place (how's that for avoiding naming it ?) there are many.

The British residency in Lucknow had been preserved just as it was after the siege. It is well worth bvisiting, and has tons of atmosphere from that time.

In Delhi, I have never quite made it to "The Ridge," were the brits held out under appalling cconditions for 3 months until Delhi was stormed and brutally sacked. I think it's where the statues of the RaJ have been dunped. I know it's just north of the spice market. IMers who have more knowledge about this please chime in!

The last Mughal Emperor, Shah Bahadur II, nominal figurehead of the rising in Delhi, took refuge in Humayun's tomb where the british found the old, blind, opium addicted man with his family. He was exiled to Rangoon (Shimla???? any info????)
Kashmir Gate, near the old Delhi RR Stn, was the scene of fightint, and if you fight the traffic to the site, there are lots of battle marks!

Jhansi, as mentioned, has a fort that was stromed and breached by the Brits. Interestingly, the breach was repaired a century later, in what appears to be a statement of Indian nationbuilding of the 1950's.

Gwalior was a center of Indian resistance, and the fort there is world-class, but the rising itself left little trace that I have seen.

Kanpur was the scene of a massacre by Nana sahib of the british , man woman and child. The ghats where this took place, as they were boarding boats supposedly under safe passage, I have heard are still there, but have not been.

the Rani of Jhansi made her last stand, after fleeing the fall of Gwalior, in Kalpi, a few miles from Jhansi.

Mangal Pandey himself wrote "memoirs" of which I know little except that it is one of the few Indian accounts to survive.

That sounds a lot like Holly wood movies. total propaganda. For example i just learned that most of the stuff mentioned in "Anna and the King" didn't take place. Heck, Anna's bio of herself was not even true. Take a look at this.

Only Sanjay Khan can produce great Indian battle scenes as he showed in The Sword of Tippu Sultan and The Great Maratha series he produced under the Numero Uno banner.

Then I guess it is historically accurate. The most famous battles were urban: at Lucknow, Kanpur and at Delhi.

Bijapuri: I am impressed!!

Rangoon does have the grave of Bahadur Shah Zafar. One of his most famous couplets, is a lament on how he did'nt even get 6 feet of land (ie his grave) in his own country.

There were some recent news reports of parts of Lucknow residency being excavated and a museum build for the artifacts found.

Some famous movies on the mutiny (or should I say "events of 1857" :-)) are "Shatranj Ke Khiladi" (The Chess Players) by Satyajit Ray and Shyam Benegal's "Junoon".
