Dear Scando,
This was the first time I watched the fabulous movies that came from the far east. Tomorrow I go in my quest for Mad Detective. Thank you.
This was the first time that Edward Tang's films had been screened in India.... I am overwhelmed.

The Band's Visit is showing here and I'm trying to get to see it.. it looks fantastic. We recently enjoyed the new and amazingly not terribly depressing (until you think about it a bit) Mike Leigh - 'Happy Go Lucky'

I concur, and would like to add to this list his latest masterpiece, "Shine A Light", the musico-documentary on the Rolling Stones, which is tremendous. They had not been filmed this way since Jean-Luc Godard made "Sympathy for the Devil" back in 1968.

You might as well add the Dylan documentary to the list. It was riveting.

I have the 2 disc DVD of Scorcese's Mi Viaggio Di Italia, which is his homage to Italian cinema that influenced his movie making. It is 4 hours long and am waiting for the right time to view it. This is supposed to be a heartfelt documentary giving a peek into the director's way of looking at things.

I also loved 'Gangs Of New York'. Day-Lewis was unforgettable.

I love Goodfellas - and I really hate violent movies, Scorsese is really the only director I can watch that sort of film by - and even then I have my hands over my eyes half the time!!! I know Taxi Driver is a great film, but I cannot bring myself to see it a second time - I'm just wussy and pathetic.

kristinm, it is hard to choose between those Ray films you mentioned, but if you have to see only one of them I would say "Jalsaghar" ("The Music Room", 1958) because of the amazing music and ambiance of decay in the last days of the zamindars. But preferably try to see the whole lot.

nomad, yes "shatranj ke khiladi" ("The Chess Players", 1977) is wonderful too.
