true....

but... don't most animation series or movies borrow from each other? I guess those tried and tested formula sells.... have you heard of final fantasy the movie by squaresoft? they had a kick ass 3d animation. it was really mind blowing but it was such a major flop since it wasn't the traditional story line and wasn't based on the "WINNING FORMULA". And i think they also had pretty good marketing... but the movie just didn't sell. but doesn't mean it's not any good.

there's a lot of fantastic anime that you have just got to see! ...and they're mostly for adult audiences. one real great animated series that i really like is "golden boy". It's so raunchy, some people think it's too perverse since it tackles a lot of taboos about sex... but it's so endearing in a way. It's 6 stories of the same guy trying to study about life, his sexuality and women. I swear you will not be dissappointed with this one.

other great stuff are from studio ghibli (princess mononoke, nausicaa, my neighbor totoro) and "akira".... you might be missing out on really good stuff. the drawings are definetely something else. japanese animation rocks.

come to think of it... I know indians are excellent artisans and animators... can you recommend me any animation made in india that I can import from my local desi grocer?

WOW. I guess, I have long list of movies to watch now..
I have seen "Final fantasy" though, and loved it. AFIK, I dont think there's any animation movie that has been conceptualised and finished as a product in India. I guess we are still working as service industry as far as animation is concerned and busy with outsourced work..!!!

...sad...

hhhmmm... about the indian animation industry... It would be sad if everyone was just doing the dirty owrk of a 1st world country... I'm sure you guys have developed your own animated series or an animated feature. (just don't know if the indian producers will eye india as a market though.... it would be hard to compete with bollywood... One of the engineers that visited us from singapore told us that bollywood outputs 800 movies a year. that's around 2 movies a day... my god. that's fierce competition for animation...hehehehe.

supposing there was only 10 movies in india that i could watch, what would be the best of them, of all time?

If you goe to imdb.com you can look up the Top 250 Hollywood movies -- rated by viewers's votes. Most of these movies listed above will be included. I am more interested in recommendations for Bollywood movies as there no sites (atleast I have not found any) with user's ratings.

good movie. The most I "like" how they screwed the scene at the beginning of the journey, where the main characters jump on the train in London and get in 1 second magically transferred to a regional train in Switzerland...

As phantom said, a very tough question and extremely subjective. Anyway, here's my 10(in no particular order) :

1. Zanjeer (revenge thriller, pure dynamite, BIG B's launching pad)
2. Kaala Patthar (life in the coal mines, BIG B's best performance)
3. Ghayal ( Sledgehammer Sunny at his best, fighting the corrupt )
4. Arjun ( Exploitation of the unemployed, Sunny's superb)
5. Kudrat ( re-incarnation, excellent cast, music, location)
6. Maachis ( On the Punjab problem, excellent dialogues, lyrics)
7. Mere Apne ( On the system in the early 70s, in Gulzaar's unique style)
8. Avtaar ( Social theme, Rajesh Khanna's top class)
9. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron ( Great comedy)
10. Katha ( Chawl life in Mumbai, in Sai Paranjpye's inimitable style)
11. Damini (seeking justice for a rape victim, even when the rapist is from the family! Meenakshi's superb, as is the incomparable Sunny)

Sorry, I just had to make it 11.

No mention of Shawshank Redemption in the top 10 English? That has to be one of the all time greats.

Just watched Shawshank... yesterday. To be honest, I was almost asleep towards the end...and then the last 10 minutes....I realized why this is a classic movie of all times!

I recommend Teen Deewarein by Nagesh Kukunoor...far cry from Shawshank ..., production value-wise but nevertheless a great tribute to it. Good attempt by Nagesh. It is not a copy of Shawshank, though there are enough signs of being inspired by it.
