Movie rec's prior to first India trip?

I'm a little over a week away from my first trip to India and looking for films (from any country) that might help introduce me to the culture. I just started doing this and have seen only two so far: "Passage to India" - excellent - and "Gandhi" - I had never seen it before and was blown away by Ben Kingsley's performance.

Any other must-sees?

I think you saw a couple of the best ones!

You may want to peruse the following related thread:

and if you are a "Passage to India" fan - be sure and check out
fellower IM'er TimMakins dedicated site to the film:

To understand the diverse complexities of today I would suggest (1) Mr. and Mrs. Iyer - a film by Ms. Aparna Sen. This is in English.
(2) Two hindi films - hopefully they will be available dubbed or subtitled in English - one called 'Rang De Basanti' and one called 'Page 3'. These three together are what I present to my friends from other parts of the world. .

Hoping you will enjoy India.

(1)Aparna Sen (director) Language - english, film: 'Mr. and Mrs. Iyer' about religious bigotry in current day India.
(2) Rang De Basanti - language - Hindi (hopefully english dubbing or subtitling will be available.) this is a film on the urban youth and their reaction to corruption at amongst politicians. A very positive film.
(3) Page 3 - language hindi - this is about three young girls struggling to establish themselves in modern day Mumbai A film on compromise.

Monsoon Wedding and Swades - both fun and certainly more "contemporary" than Ghandi or Passage to India!

Thanks for the recommendations so far: I've already seen Salaam Bombay and other than Monsoon Wedding the video store had none of the titles. I'll try elsewhere - so I watched Monsoon Wedding which was a good call since I'm going to India for a wedding! Ostensibly anyway...don't tell the groom but i want to see the himalayas.

Watch "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun" to get an idea of north indian weddings. For that purpose you can watch "Dilwale Dulhania le jaayenge" as well.
I would recommend, page-3 and RDB too
Happy Watching.

I just saw Siddhartha (1972) - Pretty good.

I can't find any of the others listed here but just found out there's an Indian video store around the corner from me. hello! it was closed but i looked in the window and it seems like it might be a good find although i may have to drag my old vcr out of retirement.

Hum Aapke Hai Kaun was a four hour torture and way way too much sweet... too much enough to puke.

I would recommend Hyderabad Blues and maybe the sequel to it. More real, and a change from the canned running around trees with atrocious costumes sequences... Love Nagesh Kukunoor (the director) here!
