Mike Myers is Guru Pitka - 'The Love Guru'

Already a bit of controversy over this film which also features Ben Kingsley as 'Guru Tugginmypudha'.

The synopsis:

In the comedy "The Love Guru," Pitka (Mike Myers in his first original character since Austin Powers) is an American who was left at the gates of an ashram in India as a child and raised by gurus.

.... from the official site & trailer which has more than a few chuckles.

........

From wiki:

"Some Hindus have expressed worry about how Hindus are portrayed and if the content will be disrespectful to their culture: "Rajan Zed, a self-described Hindu leader from Nevada, demanded that Paramount Pictures screen the film for members of the Hindu community before it is released in June. Based on the movie's trailer and MySpace page, Zed says "The Love Guru" "appears to be lampooning Hinduism and Hindus" and uses sacred terms frivolously."

Just a bit of harmless fun in my opinion - but will be interesting to see the general consensus on this film.

I've seen the preview several times and, although it looks funny, the new character does look very similar to the Austin Powers character Myers has played before.

I'm definitely going to catch the flick when it comes out, though.

I'm a sucker for those silly movies - my son and I watch Wayne's World at least twice a year. I notice the person doing the protesting is from Nevada... I'm belatedly reading Karma Cola - I suspect it won't be the Hindus Myers is making fun of as much as the gullible westerners!

So what's wrong with lampooning Hinduism and Hindus and using sacred terms frivolously anyway?

Nothing I can see - Indians seem to have a healthy sense of humour! But then I'm an atheist so all religions are fair game for me.. Life of Brian is one of my favourite movies of all time!

Yes... inspired a similar ruckus in some circles btw if I recall. Oh well, as long as it's kept to one "self-described leader"...

To see Ben Kingsley, with his most famous Indian role still clearly in the mind's eye, as Guru Tugginmypudha .... might well be worth the price of admission alone.

Perhaps, but there are always the oh-so-sensitive Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jews, Sikhs.... the usual suspects- in India who, well, get sensitive. Or pretend to.

Bring on the movie. Personally, though, I find humour funny (Peter Sellers in 'The Party' ) , not caricature.

Coincidently, I think Myers is/was still interested in reprising the 'Hrundi Bakshi' role in "The Party". But this movie idea was more of a priority as described here.

<All my trips to India and if I try to imagine a guru .... only the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi comes to mind. This same mind's image might hold true for many people in the world - perhaps this is 'guru' sterotyping, perhaps 'he' was a justified & symbolic guru caricature ..... mostly just ignorance through no need for or interest in these type of 'teachings' though. >

Midget jokes, weird childish rhymes and a beautiful scantily clad girl or two- it'll be Austin Powers with a few curry jokes thrown in, I'll wager.

Didn't Hollywood kind of already do this in The Guru, with Jimi Mistry and Heather Graham? She was also in Austin Powers, incidentally. There's the link. It's all her fault.

I'd never heard of this movie but this morning I was looking through a local weekly newspaper and saw this big ad in the musicians classifieds section. It showed this bearded guy with a double neck accoustic/electric sitar with a whammy bar (?!) and read "Guru Pitka will teach you sitar" etc. No way! I thought, Are you kidding me!? Completely suckered me in at first, until I went to the website and saw it was ad for this movie. Funny.
