"Maximum City: Bombay Lost & Found"

This book, by Suketu Mehta, just came out in the US and is dazzling. It's the author's explorations of Bombay's gangwar, prostitution, film industry, the daily lives of 18 million people trying to get on in the world--it's remarkably humane.

He meets the shooters, hitmen, for Bombay's three major gangs; with India's top cop who cracked the case of the 1993 bombings; with dancers from beer bars, the call girls who live variously as prostitutes and the girlfriends of the shooters; poets, writers, photographers; everyone connected with "Mission Kashmir," whose script he co-wrote.

If anything in this book inspires a film, it would turn out something like "City of God," from Brazil. The book has that kind of humanity shimmering out of the degradation.

I can't say enough about it. I can't put it down. It's easily one of the best books ever written about India.

thanks for the tip. I just put a copy on hold with my local library. Has anyone in Mumbai seen it for sale in the local bookstores? Price?

There's a new actress in town. Could she be THE Monalisa?

Wow, if it is the same girl it would be pretty daring of her to stick with that name, given what we learn about her in the book.

I guess someone could email Suketu with these pictures and ask him if that's her...

Something tells me he wouldn't appreciate it. He's in the middle of a messy divorce, apparently.
