Look into the listings of local plays/concerts/special screenings in the Hindustan Times or whatever mainstream newspapers. There are some performances that are free, and those that aren't... support the local artists!

Hello All,
Not exactly magical, but the Marina Hotel on the outer circle of Connaught place has live music in the restaurant. Simple sitar tabla stuff - but its nice to have music with your meal. Food is good and its not too expensive! AM

Yes, there are regular qawwali evenings at Nizzamudin every thursday which is the common sufi day for festivities anywhere. Also, there are/were ghazal evenings daily in Gold Regency in Main Baazar when I was there (July-Sept.2003).

Cochin Kerala, Taj Hotel, Indian restaurant: A couple of years ago I sat spellbound for a few hours listening to a violinist in Cochin at the Taj hotel's Indian Restaurant. He was a professor from a local university earning a few after-hours paisa. I sat, alone, at the front table facing the said musician. He could see that he had an appreciative audience, and man.... did he play!

Goatfarmer; that's nice
These guys like to be appreciated, most hotel audiences don't listen and don't care. I got to know the musicians at Coconut Lagoon Hotel in Kerala one year and went and played with them next two years I was there.

Harmonium
The most enchanting music I have listened to in India was the harmonium playing at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. It was a hot June night in 1983. I had just arrived overland on the train from Lahore, Pakistan. It was magical lying down on the cool marble floor listening to the harmonium -- peaceful and relaxed. What a great arrival to India!
