Lonely Planet: India - 2005
I leave Sydney for Delhi on 1st Feb 2007 and arrive back 1st Mar 2007. I am going to be in Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Bombay and Goa. I have basically already made the day-by-day plans of my trip, but I am having a bit of trouble with finding 4/5 star accomodation in some of these cities. Like for example, in Delhi I wanna stay at a 4/5 star hotel, which is near popular markets, pubs and clubs. Anyway, will the Lonely Planet guide to India help me out with many of these accomodation queries in ND, Jaipur, Bombay and Goa, or would it be better to keep my $50, and trying to use the internet instead?

Although its out of date the moment its released it is a handy fall back, I use a combination of both internet and lp but would never travel without that handy bible, its paid for itself 10 times over with us!

My husband uses LP - I always use the Rough Guide. This time in India Mr Judi graciously conceded the Rough Guide was far better for the 4/5 star stuff which we preferred. Hope you haven't been out shopping yet!!

It is still too early to say about trip in 2007 but I have some thoughts about latest LP. It undergone considerable reconstruction and now it has more friendly maps and up-to winter 2004-2005 and summer 2004 information.
Next edition is expected in 2007 autumn at earliest. It means information will be quite old, but maps may be useful. Because of problems with style of beginners-authors LP now concentrate on practical information instead of giving background, sight description and atmosphere. On these RG is good. Latest RG (autumn 2005) was almost the same as previous edition however few paragraphs were added, for example information about Namchi and statue of Guru Rinpoche in Sikkim. All in all it's difficult to say clearly what to do, it depends on what kinda trip will be. About hotels location - despite some mistakes even in 2005 edition LP is the best. More hotels available in listings of Footprint, but its maps is crap. |

It was my experience this time around that the Rough Guide writers must be smoking some major doobage. I found their descriptions and recommendations of certain hotels to be 180 degrees different from what I experienced, Sri Devi in Madurai being a prime example. They MUST have been hallucinating to recommend that place!

I tend to get a couple of guides every time I go. I am not really a fan of Rough or Real Guides generally, I like Eyewitness guides, but Lonely Plant is okay. The Michelin Guide might also be worth a look. I like Frommer's travel web site but I am not as sure about their books.
Use the Internet as much as you can. Many hotels and tourist sites will have web sites and email addresses or phone numbers. Portie |

Is LP the best guide if you are looking for 4/5 star hotels? They only list a few such hotels for most cities.

Last month in Bombay I've got in my hands 2005 LP's edition. I've made a single verification with the hotels in Baroda (just came from there) as the result was really terrible, nothing to see with the reality ( at least with my reality), so I'll keep my old LP and other guides and obviously Internet.

One of the hotels (closed by their words) fortunately for me reopened for few days when I reached Kargil. But I remember what I said to them in Leh - if you found mistakes in guide you could give to authors of guide some suggestions or write your own guidebook. They were startled but accepted guidebook cannot answer all questions. All people have minds to use. |
