Thumbs up Legends in tandem

For lovers of music in Mumbai, it was a treat that was a long time coming. 15 years to be precise. It came in the form of a performance featuring sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, his Grammy-nominated daughter Anoushka, and tabla genius Zakir Hussain.

There was a hitch there. These days I am very surprised & a bit hurt seeing Panditji trying to prop up his daughter. Quite an ugly controversy came up regarding adjustment of mike volumes at concert.

Do u know, Mr. Zakir banged the mike on this table at Mumbai.

Panditji was very angry with Zakir.

Zakir is supposed to be a arrogant man that way. If he finds his jugalbandi artiste perform well, and if he feels the audience his enjoying the other artistes performance, he does things like what he did in Bombay.

Shame Shame to Zakir Hussain.

hmmm

couldnt get tickets since it was sold out but friends who went saw a very ugly spat between Ravi Shankar and Zakir Hussain and are too shocked at the moment. Later, Ravi Shankar came out and accused Zakir of being unprofessional while Zakir had no comments. Ravi Shankars comments are pretty anal as you can read in some of the news sources.... Even Hariprasad Chaurasia took an opinion blaming 'young' artists....

Ugh! is the only word i can say! Ugh Ugh! Ugh!

Anyone go to the Mandolin Srinivas, Zakir and a Sitar player concert yesterday at Worli?

Zakir's silence speaks volumes about his respect for Panditji. The volume of the tabla mike was lowered by some one else(I dont want to name) at some one's behest. It is really very painful to witness such scenes.

It was in the news paper that Zakir hussain said - Sukanya, wife of Ravi Shankar is responsible for that. And an interesting counter attack from Ravi Shankar that “it is normal that the sound of Tabla should be 20% less”.
Now, who will measure that ? The conflict between Tabla and other instrument is always a debatable thing but my point is that both of them are the masters, the legend and thousands of artists – students follow them and they just can’t do it. We’ll love to see that they are not losing their respect.
This incident is not good for music.

Go & try telling this 20% less or -7dB setting to Pandit Kishan Maharaj & come back unscathed. Seen the small hammer used to tune tablas?
Has anyone been to the Harrison memorial concert? I was stunned seeing Panditji & listening to Anoushka. I felt ashamed in the company of my friends!
Ofcourse from the showbitz point of view wow what a show!

I have seen him, also niladhari kumar, fazal khan, tauriq qureshi. Lot of cool fusion stuff. If one wants classical then don't miss out on the Sawai Gandharva festival or Pune festival which gets held in Pune every yr.
