Lage Raho Munna Bhai's Social Impact
On Saturday night I was at a friends birthday party, and we were talking about a movie we saw a few weeks back, Lage Raho Munna Bhai. He then continued to tell me that it is making Gandhi's philosophy popular again in India, and that there is an increased interest in his books and life. Not knowing first hand (not being in India for 2 years), can people in India see this happening? Or has the media just blown the effect out of proportion?

The media has blown it out of proportion and though it is a humorous movie ,they wont unfortunately have any impact on the mindset of the people.I cant see tht happening NSW.
As usual ,only money talks in India. |

media was looking for stories thats it. most of the stories had little to do with gandhi or his philosophy. infect at times i thought that they did certain "GANDHIGIRI" just to come in news.
there are people who were and still are doing good work. only good this was that media highlighted their achievements. |

The movie did help in revoking interest in the Gandhian philosophies. Apart from that.. for short term, i dont see any effect coming into play. At least not as drastic as "Rang De Basanti" affected the psyche of the indian youth, prompting them to do candle light vigils for things they believe in and a lot of other spheres.
But in the long run, I do think that "munnabhai" helped in getting the focus back on gandhi and how his teachings can help in today's world.. maybe we will see the effects some time down the line ![]() |
