Kite Runner Movie Was Just Screened

The movie Kite Runner was just screened at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute in Bryn Mawer Pennsylvania USA a suburb of Philadelphia. The Screen Writer David Bennioff of the movie was there to answer any questions after the screening.
The movie was well done - of course the book was better in many ways. Being in Afganistan in the early 70's the movie did have the feel of that era in sometimes epic proportions. Very nice camera work. The Talabans wouldn't like the way they were portrayed. A very non hollywood movie. Because it was compacted it seemed sadder than the book. Well acted good screenwrite 85% subtitled. You had to read fast to keep up.
Many of the Afgan scenes were filmed in China
The book is doing great. It started out with a 50,000 printing. It is now in its 17th printing. 1,500,000 printed so far.
I think it opens in a month in theatres.
I was wondering why in the world would it be showing at this little art theatre then I saw the name Kimmel as an executive director - he is from this area and has a big footprint here. That may have something to do with it being shown. By the way the screening was one time and it was free.
But I can't wait for Shantram which comes out in next spring.

I loved the book and found Terry Gross's interview of Khaled Hosseini to be excellent. You can listen to it online here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...toryId=4795618

The bit about Khaled sitting next to someone reading his book on the airplane is wonderful.

Have you read his latest book? A Thousand Splendid Suns? I highly recommend this one if you loved the Kite Runner.

Thousand Splendid Suns

This book is excellent. It brings to life the ways of an average Afgan citizen. Giving a detailed portrayal of Afgani life, culture, habits and attitudes...the way it once was. The writer with his unique sensitivity manages to show us what the country was before the very name 'Afganistan' became synonymous with the images this name brings to mind now.

Loved the Kite Runner book, I thoroughly enjoyed the film also. Cant wait to get stuck into 'A thousand Splendid Suns. So sad that Afghanistan's heritage and culture is getting ravaged with war.

the movie was very emotional, but the characters' story overwhelmed the larger picture of Afghanistan.

I just finished reading 1000 splendid suns and was also moved, but it didn't get buried in the plot line. The situation in Afghanistan came through loud and clear

1000 Splendid Suns

I have attempted to read 1000 Splendid Suns but have given up early on twice. I am overwhelmed by the fact that all Afghan women stories are terribly depressing. Having spent much time there and loved ever moment in the early 70's, I only ever heard women, they gigled and laughed from under the burka. But once a western dressed uncovered Afghan lady was spotted in Kabul. It was so refreshing to see her.
I will try again to finish this book sometime.

Read Kite runner recently. Decently written in parts, I thought, though kind of melodramatic and a little far fetched towards the end.

Dunno how well it reflected the situation in Afghanistan at that time, either. The author obviously belongs to a well off class of people, and the fact is that the Taliban was welcomed by many/most? Afghans when they first came in.

Readable, yes. Excellent, no.

My two bits.

Yay Capt! I'm not the only one who thinks The Kite Runner is overrated. The plot is so contrived, and the end was tacky and cloying. When I say that, people say "Oh, but didn't it portray life in Afghanistan well?". How do they know? They weren't there!

Couldn't stand Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist either, and seem to be the only one. Ho hum.
