In 1978, the organising committee of the Berlin Film Festival ranked him as one of the three all-time best directors.

In 1992, he received the honorary Academy Award ©A.M.P.A.S. ® - Lifetime Achievement - "In recognition of his rare mastery of the art of motion pictures and for his profound humanitarian outlook, which has had an indelible influence on filmmakers and audiences throughout the world."

Other honours include "Lègion d'Honneur", France and "Bharatratna" (Jewel of India), India.

He received numerous awards, both for personal achievements as a filmmaker and for the films he made.

how so very right.

satyajit ray set a trend that is, unfortunately, not followed by indian film makers. they go for the jazzy stuff that fall in the category of money spinners. no one remembers them after the initial excitement and hype is over. they want to capture eyeballs. they do not realise that capturing hearts is a different kettle of fish altogether!

Can someone name one of his film that involved two guys, time travels etc...
and had a kitschy song that went something like:
atkan batkan, dahi ke chatkan ....
bolo more aka , kaa cheez hai...

It was fantastic, i saw it for free on DoorDarshan (yeah i'm talking those days) ... i saw it like 30 years ago .. err less than 20 i think... but forgot its name.

Edit: oh and i think either one of the characters name was "Gopi" or it was a part of the name of the movie....

ya its the GUPI - BAHGA ur tlking about.

it has a trilogy..... GUPI GYNE BAGHA BYNE; HIROK RAJAR DESHE; and GUPI BAGHA FEERE ELO;

one shud see "hirok rajar deshe"...its the best of the lot.

just finished watching the last movie in the apu trilogy.

truly beautiful cinematically. was slightly shocked though to see that sharmila tagore who played apu's wife was 12 years old during filming. not that she looked much older.

too bad satyajit is less known in india than this bollywood sing and dance crap
