scando: here's a random mixmatch of starters for you:
[ them are personal likings... so please chip in all of you ]

new delhi times
deewar
company
bend it like beckham
chak de
manthan
aaradhana
aandhi
jewel thief
johnny mera naam
guide

incidentally, to combat piracy, moserbaer has begun to burn dvd's of indian movies, selling at Rs 30-40. cool.[/quote]

Brishti, most of these are quite old. Was hoping for films of the last 10 years. Chak de? I'm not sure I can stand another King Khan extravaganza. Is he always the same character?

Mind your Language
(Class play, different characters assigned to the students, to signify "good" and "bad")
Danielle (the French girl): Am I good or bad?
Mr. Brown: Bad.
Danielle: Good! Because when I'm bad, I'm verrry good!

(Ok, we shud get back to Ray and/or KJ now, otherwise any moment now a mod will be along).

Jyotii-da: I entirely agree with this stmt. Glad to have found this thread. I "was" a keen fan of Ritwik Ghatak, Tapan Sinha & Satyajit Ray movies .... and seen quite a few of them between 1965-70 (when in IIT-Kharaghpur) Haven't seen any movies of that "class" since then .... except a few stray ones, once in a way, like "Bhuvan Shome" you mentioned. ... chak de not the regular khan tamaasha. which is why i mentioned it!

yup, my list is kinda old unable to sit through 3 hours of gibberish anymore - what to do.
ah yes - one sorta new movie that i did enjoy was - gangster.

bluechip:

if you can: try watching 36 chowringhee lane by aparna sen.
IMO - she should've stopped making films after that but that movie is good - not in the same league as them masters - but good, nontheless.

jyotida: what do you think of gautam ghosh and rituparno's movies? buddhadeb dasgupta?

Not sure if this movie I am going to ask about is mentioned in this thread...

A Bengali friend literally made me sit for a Satyajit Ray movie. And for some reason I really liked it. Did not understand any of the conversations but did get the story. I like Bengali language. A girl speaking Bengali is really melodious for me. The language has something special in it

Okay the story goes something like this : A wannabe singer boy from a very poor family had some bad luck with the King of his Kingdom. Raged the king evicts him out of the village...on a donkey. He wanders around and somehow bumps into another wannabe music artist lad who too has been wandering...

.
..
They get some magic tools from someone (God?)...aaha...cannot remember much...but they had a good time using them. Go-anywhere-you-wish shoes, anytime-anywhere food, one gets the the most melodious voice and the other gets superb skills of playing a 'dapali' (not sure about its English word)

What movie is this? Any guesses? It's a B&W, very old print movie. Would like to grab it whenever I get a chance.

My signature here is a statement from the same movie.

Bhai Brishti both Gautam & Rituporno are very good film makers. A few days back I watched Bariwali by Rituporno, liked it very much.
Last year at the Osian film festival I watched Kaalpurush by buddhadeb impressive.
