Indian TV

I just read a thread about 'Indian Idol' which also mentions 'India's Child Genius'. Are these shows in English?

What TV shows do you recommend I try to catch when in Kerala and Tamil Nadu in Jan/Feb/March 2006?

I know that "India's Child Genius" is in English, but I'm not sure about "Indian Idol".

Make sure you catch "The Kumar's at No. 42" on "Star World" (Sundays at 10pm). I think "India's Child Genius" is just before it. If you're into South Indian popular film music, you'll have lots of options.

There's no shortage of TV stations - Cable TV is everywhere - so you can watch a wide range of programmes in English, many of them made in the USA and the UK.

I just wonder why you are going to Kerala & TN to watch TV when you probably have one at home!

hey Linda,

You may be able to sample some of the India TV Clips here on this site.

If you have broadband, click "Broadband TV". It has TV Channels from all the countries on the planet...well Channels that are broadcastble via internet that is.

http://tv4all.com/portal.htm

1) Click Link above
2) Click "Broadband TV"
3) Choose India on the left menu
4) Choose your station. It will show you what ever is broadcasting at the current moment via internet.

Hope this helps

-John

The portal i linked above is only applicable to Local India TV channels. But like Johnsw said, there is cable and pretty much anything is available on Cable.

I recall that India is the biggest cable audiance anywhere in the world which give you some clue as to how popular TV is in India.
There are reams of channels from MTV to Bollywood movies, news from BBC, CNN German TV, AL Jazeera, sports channels for everything from baseball to cricket, Discovery, Nat Geo,
So you can watch whatever you want!
I'm not up on the most popular domestic TV but I enjoyed a channel called Bharat, lot's of travel stuff about India and history and architecture!

i watched fashion tv, in my various indian hotel rooms, quite frequently, when i was unwinding from my day. no language barrier when no one was speaking anyway. what took me by surprise was the 'midnight lace' hour. yes, it was at midnight, and there was lots of lace, but not a whole lot else it was just so 'revealing' in a country where i was encouraged to keep my skirt ankle length and my shoulders covered up. india, land of extremes !

There's a Hindi serial called "Asthitva"-it's apparently about a woman who marries a younger man, and then he goes off with someone else and all sorts of things happen. I haven't seen any episodes yet but it seems to be very addictive. Not too sure of the schedule, but I think it airs Monday-Thursday around 8/9 p.m.

don't watch. For your sanity, it's best to avoid all contact with any TV channel. Especially the regional ones. I'd hope that you don't know the language, hence would tune out fast.

FashionTV... someone once told me it is just for bored men in hotel rooms who can't sleep. Yep, that's how I discovered it .

But one has to be very bored! Ugly girls, ugly clothes

I've seen them, like 10 years ago? In certain things, my Dad was smart enough to buy a TV only after we were 18 years old; If we were really desperate to watch cricket matches we'd go to the neighbours.

Old Rule: If there's a match , everyone's invited.

He could have bought the TV way back but didn't, so we kids ended up on the streets playing games in the park. Apart from a few programmes, TV lost it charm for me. A few which I still remember or sometimes get to watch
