Indian television
Why is there only around 10 channels carrying foreign content out of nearly 150 TV channels in India?
Is it blasphemous to view foreign programming in the new India? Even music channels like MTV, V show only local songs. Before the arrival of cable, DD at least showed good international songs in a music programme. Adult channels like TB6 were also allowed during the time of the great real culture minded IK Gujral |

Supply and demand. Nothing much beyond that.
Adult and such channels excluded. Music? Dunno, never watch. Music is for listening, not watching- unless live.

Well, if you use Tata-Sky, the satellite service and subscribe to the Super-Saver package ( buy, buy, buy, ONLY INR 275 per month ) you'll get Discovery, History, NatGeo,Cartoon, Disney, Nick, BBC-World, Animal Planet, CNN(not CNN-IBN), HBO in addition to the India-specific channels. http://www.tatasky.com/channel-packages.html
HBO in India, tomorrow, will show - Hollow Man, Ghost Rider, Blood Diamond(good movie!) and Bee Movie. http://www.hbosouthasia.com/southasia/schedule Want more - for just INR 45 etc, you will get ... - you get the picture. No porn on satellite of course, this IS India, appearances must be kept up (and I'm glad of it), and because of the deeply exploitative nature of this, contrary to all the porn industry contributions to the debate, there is absolutely no way that I'll discuss how you can get porn in India in this forum. -skk |

Can add dedicated English music radio (on TV, with the Satellite TV providers), National Geographic, English movie only channels like Pic, Star Movies, Zee Cafe (is it cafe? It is Zee)... etc etc.

One way to get more english channels is to swap with someone in the USA.
I've got the opposite problem, I can only get a few Kannada-language stations here in the U.S.A. and would like to get a full selection like is available in India. If somebody is interested in exchanging tv with me let me know. I'd be willing to pay someone to host channels for me if they didn't want to swap, whatever to get my channels. Let me know, thanks gents! -ajay

We were watching tv in our hotel in Mumbai and flicking through the channels and came across an Australian station or program or something.. we watched the news and a current affairs report - really strange after being out of the country for 4 weeks.
