Indian Music Video Clips suitable for teaching English Schools

Hi all,

I'm hoping you can help...... I am a music teacher for a secondary school in South Yorkshire, England and due to teach my year 8's (12-13yr)Traditional Indian Music after the Easter Break. I am looking for video clips that I can download to show them and was wondering whether you could recommend any.

I am actually visiting India for 2 weeks over the Easter Period so hope I will get the opportunity to video the real macoy!! But just in case the camera doesn't work for some reason, I need some other sources as well..

PS I'm having some difficulty downloading from Youtube so other sites, links would be much appreciated.

Thanks a million

Lindsey

What kind of traditional Indian music?
hindustani classical?
carnatic classical?
semi-classicals?
folk music (hundreds of different kinds/schools in different languages)?
vocal or instrumental?

Google searches for

carnatic mp3
hindustani mp3

both give results and are as good a place to start as any.

Which part of India are you coming to? The north has Hindustani and the South has Carnatic music --- but you probably knew that.

CDs are much cheaper here: you will be able to pick up a handful for very little money.

By the way, where about in England are you? London has quite a lot of classical Indian music, and even other places do to. If your area has a Sri-Lankan community, dig into it a little and you might uncover some carnatic music going on.

Hi Lindsey,
I'm afraid i can't help too much on the music scene other than suggest googling etc but I don't suppose you're from Sunny Donny are you???
In S Yorks, there's such a large indian community settled with social groups and whathaveyou that you could probably meet some really interesting people who'd be only too pleased to share their record collection!
best o luck lass

Thanks for all the posts guys!! I'm actually from Sheffield.... I've checked out some of the google links you have suggested and that ripzor.com is great.

Traveling to Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Pushkar, Jodhpur and back to Delhi. We only have 2 weeks, fitting it into the Easter holidays!!!!

I'm so excited now, only 2 more sleeps until we go!! I'm really looking forward to experiencing the contrast in music, and hopefully bringing those experiences back to the kids. I will most definately look into getting some CD's over there, but I was really trying to get videos I can show the Year 8's so they can understand the atmosphere the Raga creates. Maybe I'll be able to pick up some DVD's????

Thanks again!!

hi again Lindsey,

Look out for "VCD"S. Just like a dvd but cheaper and split onto two cd's (a film length). They're really practical and play on computers as well as dvd players. hey're about half price of indian dvd's.
I'm sure you'll pick up some really good stuff! Enjoy your holiday

They are half (or worse) the quality too, but, until recently, DVDs had not really taken off here, and the cheaper VCD was very common.

You can also get MP3 discs too, but I don't know what quality to expect.

Come to South India next, and enjoy our Carnatic (South Indian) classical music. Come to Chennai in December/January, where what is possibly the biggest musical event in the world goes on: more than a month and thousands of concerts!
