Reading some of the threads here, I see an interest in Indian movies and music among some people.

So thought some people might like to translate a few lines of their favourite music (in terms of lyrics) from movie songs, ghazals etc.

Hope someone finds this interesting!

My 2 cents:

har taraf har jagah beshumaar aadmi, phir bhi tanhaiyon ka shikaar aadmi

==>every corner of this world is full of people, yet somewhere someone is always a victim of loneliness

I love Gazals and Old Hindi songs.. ( infact i love all kinds of songs.Rajasthani, Pahadi, u name it ..even english songs i do like)..
Since u were discussing on Hindi ..let me put down some lines ..
If i write about my favorite it will be long list.
1.Pal Pal dil ke paas tum rehate ho...( every moment, every second u stay near to my heart. or in short 'you are in my heart always )
2.Tu jaham jaham chalega mera saaya saath hoga ... ( where ever u go my shadow will always with u..or in short where ever u go i will be part of u..)
3. Aaj Janne ki Zid na karo.... ( dont go today atleast...?)

Well my Hindi knowledge may not be as good as urs

"maa sunao mujhe woh kahani, jisme raja na ho, na ho rani"

Its about a poor child who is asking his mother to tell a story that contains no kings and queens, the story should be about you and me, the story of the condition of our heart and life, a story about earth, a story that has no angels from heaven.

The story that can teach me how to laugh, that can make me forget my hunger and starvation, that is full of reality and full of hope! I don't want just another old story about kings and queens!

Thats the best I could translate it!

......magar mujhe lauta de oh bachpan ki yaadeen, woh kagaz ki kashti woh barish ki paani
a beautiful gazal by Jagajit singh.. tells us that, you can take away everything i have but , give me back my childhood memories, those paper boats and that rain water..(in short give me back my childhood )
At times dont we all feel like going back to our childhood???

Two songs - both among my alltime favourites - spring to mind :

1. From the 1960s suspense thriller "The Train" starring Rajesh Khanna and Nanda, this duet has been excellently rendered by the inimitable Rafi and Lata and has music by the incomparable R.D. Burman:

The words are something like this- "Mujhse bhala ye kaajal tera, nain base din rain, ni soniye!!', sung by the hero to the heroine. Meaning:" More fortunate than me is the kaajal you are wearing, my sweetheart; as it nestles in your eyes day and night! " The hero then playfully tugs at the heroine's "pallu", and she responds with " Chhod bedardi, aanchal mera, ho gayee main bechain", meaning : "Let go of my pallu, oh heartless, or you'll leave me restless, honey! "

The first stanza goes like this with the hero saying :" Naam ki tu hain meri sajaniya, naam ka main hoon tera piya; reshami lat se khele ye gajra, door se tarse tera piya !" Meaning: "I am your lover and you are my lover only for namesake, as its the gajra(short string of flowers which ladies wear in their hair) which is clinging to your silky hair, while I can only watch expectantly from afar !!"
The second verse has the heroine singing : "Prem gali mein hoga na balma tujhsa diwana aur koi; neend udaana, chain churana, seekhe ye tujhse chor koi !" Meaning :" There may not be as crazy a lover as you, in lovers' lane; how to steal a lady's heart, how to steal a lady's peace is something a thief can learn from you!"

And so on !!

2. From the 1981 movie "Kudrat", a film dealing on re-birth and set entirely in my favourite place Shimla; is the wonderful solo composed by the great R.D. Burman, sung with intense passion by Kishore Kumar and picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini:

"Hame Tumse Pyaar Kitna ye hum nahin jaanate, magar jee nahin sakate tumhare bina !" Meaning : "I do not know how much I love you, but know for certain that I cannot survive without you !"

A couple of lines from the first stanza " Tumhe koi aur dekhe to jalta hain dil. Badi mushakilon se phir guzartaa hain dil." Meaning : "I feel jealous when anybody other than me looks at you. My heart then goes through a period of great agony! "

And so on !!

A wonderful lyric with great music and picturisation !!
