This is so sad. My dad is a police officer in that very same area. He has lost so many men in that area.

Its kind of embarassing to be complaining about my work commute when you see people going through so much more worse.

Dear Shekhar, maybe I have to look the film again, but I really don't get a clear picture about the reason why the 'rebels' are bordering/terrorising the locals in that area. Do you have any clue?

Joph.

There are lots of reasons.

The common theme here is what would a poor man do when one or the other happens and there is no other means of Livelihood.

a) the GOI signs away their area for Timber felling

b) for a new dam

c) mining leases spread over large area similar to Posco (a korean steel conglomerate)

d) Special Economic Zones (SEZ like Shangai) development which displaces 10-20 villages in total each with a pop. of ~2-5000

e) for recognition of their tribal and regional identity (Telegana et al)

and lastly the 'foreign' hand; some foreign power is destabilizing the country.

Like most developing countries, for the welfare of a few thousand, a million must die.

So, the disillusioned youth take up arms. Then they forget their idealogy and start looting, rape and murder. then the movement sputters out.

Which is how the GOI tackles this menace. As long as no one in Delhi is affected, it will wait for the 'resistance' leaders to die and then the movement is scarcely mentioned in the papers apart from the occasional flare up. (The Telegana movement is one though it appears to heading towards a solution)

Depressingly, every state in India has had one at some point or the other.

As for the validity of the movement? Your guess is as good as mine.

my guess would be China. You can see how communism has spread thru Nepal (goodbye last Hindu kingdom), Bengal (communist for many years) and now into Andhra and as in the documentary, Chattisgarh. (& Yes, other states too)

Altho' I may be dismissed as a paranoid conspiracy theorist, this is part of the One World Government Plot. Communism & Fascism are not opposites but oppoSAMES. As the Indian Government (and all other gvnts worldwide) are all part of this plot then the Gvnt of India will just let it go ahead until the local people are completely broken (not far to go I imagine)

Even though I have said China are the foreign hand, India no doubt plays it's part (arming anti-naxalites with bows and arrows! obviously they don't want them to win!) In fact if China had no part to play the GoI could just create a 'false flag' operation. I believe China & India are working together on this.

This is an attempt to uproot and drive people to death or abject slavery and fear. it works well outside of the cities. For those of us inside cities they will conquer us by technological means (RFID chips, Nat ID cards etc)

Order out of Chaos.

GC, I hope I am just paranoid about this but I keep seeing the US & UK (others too) moving to a police state. I can also see this thing going global. If it does India will not be an exception. I hope I'm wrong.

as for the mountain air and green stuff - thats what I need right now. It's probably a lack of those things why I am thinking this way. No worries, soon have my head sorted in a month or so.

Thanks Joph.

Quite some time ago when I was just starting to get to know India as other than a tourist (and I've still only hardly started) I was asking here on IM... what's all this Naxalites? What's this Naxalite Infestation that the papers are always talking about, making them sound more like termites than rebels? People tried to explain ---but I now do I feel like I have even half a clue.

Even after DD's post above, I'm still mystified as to why they should be intent on destroying the lives of ordinary people.

We should examine why Indian policy has given birth to the Naxalite movement and then try to provide a solution to these problems. Otherwise the Naxalites will never cease to exist.
