'Earth Pilgrim' BBC2 Friday 18/01/08 (UK)

Interesting article in a newspaper today about an upcoming documentary featuring an Indian-born Jain Monk, 71 year-old Satish Kumar and his thoughts about ecology and nature as he roams Dartmoor in S.W. England.
The article isn't particularly well written but it suggests that he has some interesting things to say - probably well worth watching.
If only I owned a tv . . . nah, I'll visit friends!
Johnny.

Edit - oops, that'll be at 8pm.

I just finished seeing it for the first time on Discovery (the part about Kanishka and the Kushan empire.
Prancing? Dunno, I didn't think so.
But patronising creep? Not at all, I thought he was very good.
Very well-researched too.

Airing on Dutch TV next week: Yoav Shamir's Flipping Out.

Quote:
Military service is compulsory in Israel for all Jewish men and women. After their years of service, they are granted a discharge bonus, which many of them use to fly to India to recover from their experiences. Approximately 90 per cent will use drugs during their stay, and each year some two thousand of them will need professional help due to this drug use. The psychotic break with reality they experience is commonly referred to as “flipping out.”

Shot over a period of two years by award-winning documentary filmmaker Yoav Shamir, Flipping Out offers a close-up look at these former soldiers, most of them under the age of 25, as they follow this strange post-military odyssey. ...

It was yesterday. I missed it

It's a new production I think, seems to be touring the festivals, if I'm not mistaken. Just thought it might offer a nice insider look at an oft-discussed topic. I'm sure I'll catch it some time in the future.

This thread is of great interest in that one can get a sampling of the documentary/programming on India that is happening and ongoing out there in TV Land ..... but an effort in frustration because of the snowball in hell's chance that the posted program will ever air/appear on 'your' cable television package.

Thanks, Dzi, might as well have guessed Will check it out one of these days. I've seen his Checkpoint, which I found quite impressive. Caused a bit of a ruckus because of his mixing up of documentary and enacted material though, if I remember correctly.

You're right, Peak, but then I guess those titles one is bound to run into here or there at some point & have them ring a bell. Dunno about North American TV though... a few channels we receive luckily haven't thrown all standards to the wind yet. (I caught a fragment today of a BBC documentary series called "Women in Black," presented by one Amani Zain I think, on [British?] Muslim female perspectives. While a little pop culture it seemed to offer some welcome perspectives from their point of view.)

Nine hours to Rama is on AMC early tomorrow (4:30am eastern -June 18th) morning for North American Satellite/Cable subscribers. The film was shot on location in 1962/63 & might be worth watching/taping - if only to see the India/Delhi scenes/backgrounds circa 1960's.

I live in Holland. Most of these channels are unknown to me. Do they have a equivalent on the Internet?
