Victoria's Empire BBC1 29/4/07 (BST)
On British TV this weekend.
Quote from BBC Web Site - Victoria's Empire Sun 29 Apr, 20:00 - 21:00 (British Summer Time) In all her years as a British monarch, Queen Victoria never ventured abroad to visit her empire (apart from the occasional trip to Ireland and the Isle of Wight). So Victoria Wood is going to have a look for her. Calcutta is the first stop. Victoria takes a taxi through the city to see the extent of the British residue and discovers very well preserved Victorian buildings amongst the colours and textures of this marvellous city. She chats with Indian resident Toby Sinclair and discovers the intriguing way we learned local languages, and the legacy that will allow India to become an economic super power. Then it's up to Darjeeling where British women would avoid the intensity of the Calcutta summers, and where taking tea wasn't the only diversion in the long, often lonely, summer nights. |

Clive's house in Kolkata
Stumbled across a very interesting programme on UKTV History last night. It was an episode of House Detectives at Large (!) where Dan Cruickshank and others looked at the crumbling remains of Sir Robert Clive's house in Dum Dum, now part of Kolkata.
Clive was working for the East India Co in the mid 1700's and was in charge of the military operation to retrieve Calcutta from the Nawab who had captured it from the British. When they started delving into the interior of the house, which was falling to bits (no roof, plaster falling off everywhere) and totally without legal protection, it turned out that it had been built around the original Nawab's house from the 16th century. This encouraged ASI to take an interest and they subsequently carried out a detailed excavation of the mound on which the house stands. They discovered that there was lots of evidence of early Mughal settlement -pottery and so on - dating back to the 1300's. ASI are now giving it full protection. Does anyone know anything about this? Anybody visited? There was also what looked like a very well preserved Mughal city about 140km upstream, but the name escaped me. Yet another reason to go back to Kolkata. Guided tour Somnath? Mike |

India on television. 'frequently'
There is now a plethora of programmes about India on the television in the UK this is something new.
The one that interested me most was named ‘Bombay Railway' it is fantastic. The programme covers just about everything that you could think of, from the children who self employ themselves on the railway, the earliest history of the system and open statements like ‘India has never in 5000 years attempted to invade another country'. And slips in little statements of the country's history. Acts of heroism where a driver had a heart attack and managed to halt the train and call for assistance before collapsing. It was ongoing and gives a very good impression of things that are good in India, (we know the downside of that) notable is the fact that the name is ‘Bombay railway', the commentary however states ‘Mumbai' ~'seek and ye shall find'. Not what you were looking for, but you will find'.~ .....Me..... (In an off moment) Last edited by machadinha : Jul 19th, 2007 at 05:51. Reason: merged threads |

BBC World TV has a whole month full of programs about India and Pakistan right now.
Just yesterday I saw a documentary about Calcutta with emphasis on culture and arts, and the second part of a series about a couple in Delhi preparing for their wedding. Yesterday's half hour was about jewelry, gold, diamonds, etc. The BBC also has shows about schools, the countryside, business and other topics in India this month. Very interesting for people like me who don't live there already. |

BBC Documentaries and Programmes. India 60th.
There have been some fascinating programmes on the BBC just lately to coincide with Indias 60th anniversary of independance. Stuff on Mumbai railways and the railways in monsoon season. Comedian Sanjeev Bhaskar tracing his roots through India and the Punjab. The best is on now.... India by Historian Michael Wood. Hope some of the rest of you around the world can get to see some of these fascinating programmes.
