Notice her early travel schedule btw, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever since she's traveling back and forth in some highly illogical patterns which would kill a backpacker's budget and drain your energy. I guess it could have been edited in that way, or she had inflexible appointments with some of the people she met.
As I watched that all I could think of was that she should have joined IndiaMike first and posted her itinerary. We would have sorted her out.

Aren't majority of India's TV shows and movies poached off of European and hollywood original content?

I always assumed so....

You assumed wrong. The documentaries, which is what this thread is primarily about, are all 100% about India and her culture, secrets & beauty. Nothing foreign about them really.

That is what i stated "majority" and not "all".....

but even then i cannot shake the feeling of deja vu in regards to the premises of such shows...i blame this on the fact that I had cracked open many an Indian movie dvd to only revisit some other movie i had seen....

Wow, you got some real hangups about Ma India. How is the Sri Lankan film industry? - all original ideas/content/style - or are they more a clone of the Bollywood genre?

Ghanjini, Sarkar, Dhoom and a host of others are influenced by Hollywood films. And Crorepati is who wants to be a millionaire but the crossover isn't huge.

How many Indian movies & shows do you know about? Do you know how many languages are spoken in India? How would you define "majority" in the Indian context?

Some movies(mainly bollywood) and television shows do have content/ideas from hollywood/american TV but that's been happening in the last 10/15 years.

Based on your other posts on other threads, Iam curious to know what else do you assume about India?

the narayana hrudayalaya hospitals were pioneered by dr devi shetty.
what these hospitals are known for is - their quality of care.
same same to all patients - whether they have money, some money, no money.
quite an amazing doc - his commitment to the best medical care for anybody, irrespective of economics

apologies if this documentary has been posted about before...

the ganga - a complete documentary

I've been watching a few more tv programs about India: Gordon Ramsay's Great Escape, Ewan McGregor's Cold Trails, and Heston Blumenthal's In Search of Perfection.

Aspects of Ramsay's show is actually very good, bordering brilliant I think. He's visiting some rare spots among the obvious like Delhi and Mumbai, I especially enjoyed his scenes as a cook on a train (I didn't know they made the food fresh), his visit in Lucknow where he oversees a spectacular byryani, and some off the beaten trail places in the east/north-east. However, he doesn't seem to have had any coaching in how to behave in India, or maybe he just doesn't care. His very frequent swearing is a bit off putting and at times embarrassing, although it seems to be toned down a bit in the last part of the series. He's very enthusiastic at the same time, so you have a feeling he might just lack an alternative way of expressing himself. I haven't seen any of his other shows so I wouldn't really know.

Cold Trails is simply brilliant, it's a true pleasure watching the scenes where McGregor's traveling through Bihar on bike, boat and train. His visits to remote villages is also interesting. The second half of the program is set in western Nepal.

Blumenthal's show is a search for the perfect chicken tikka masala, and around 1/4th of the program is set in Old Delhi and Karim's and Moti Mahal focusing on Butter Chicken. In my own search for a proper recipe for the Moti Mahal Butter Chicken this is the closest I've seen so far. Very interesting show which shows how you can make your own tandoor.

I would recommend all these shows.

Anyone catch Channel 4's 'Kashmir's Torture Trail' last night? Well worth a watch, but some truly horrifying stories.
