India in Indian Cinema

Before I went to India, the places portrayed in Indian films were just mere backdrops. Darjeeling in "Main Hoon Na" and Shimla in "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" meant very little to me. Now that I've come back from my first trip and know much more about places in India, I can now truly appreciate an Indian film's setting. I have lots of fun seeing Shah Rukh Khan in familiar places and enjoy guessing the location of places that are unfamiliar. Here are a couple of movies that helped to give me my daily dose of India:

1. Swades - Just one overhead shot of Connaught Place got me into India mode. You can also catch some more of New Delhi.
2. Koi Mil Gaya - This morning I relived Nainital from my living room!

Anyone have a similar experience/movies to recommend? Can anyone from the South recommend a movie with Munnar in it? Thanks!

Recently re-viewed "Bandit Queen" with Byronic to see if we had visited the location on our tour of deepest Madhya Pradesh last year. Sho-nuff, it was at a VERY out of the way fort we had visited. Great feeling, that

Who has seen this film?

This was the first film that showed rural India in its full glory. Where was it shot?

1. The 1980 "Kudrat" was shot in and around Shimla

2. The 1980 "Karz" was partly shot in Ooty

Interestingly, both these movies have a "re-incarnation" theme and are thoroughly entertaining, with excellent music providing the bonus.

3. The 1981 "Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hain" was largely shot in Darjeeling, with Rishi Kapoor wooing Padmini Kolhapure on the top of the Darjeeling toy train, with a lovely song. This is a wonderful scene, without any vulgar gyrations, unlike the "Dil Se" scene.
Check it out!

dilse and aradhana were shot from the toy train to darjeeling from new jalpaiguri.

Lekin, ruudali and(now) paheli in the rajasthan desert.

Nandha was shot in the rameshwaram harbor

Dilse was Also shot in the Ladakh desert in JAmmu and Kashmir.

If you looked at english films, Powell and pressburger's Black NArcssus was shot in the himalayas. Jean renoir's River was shot on the banks of the teesta in Bengal. Gunga din was filmed in hollywood, though.

I love watching India from the background of Bollywood movies.

In the 1960s and early 1970s the trend for Bollywood movies was to have the exotic locations be in Kashmir and Shimla. This gave the common man the excitement of seeing beautiful locals that they would probably not get to see in their lifetimes. So Bollywood movies were not only, drama, comedy, action, dance, song, and romance, but also a bit of travelogue too. That is what was meant by "masala entertainer". For a small ticket price, the common man was treated to a "masala" of good entertainment that lasted 3 hours out of the long hard day.

In the late 1970s and the 1980s the trend was to show a good fantasy song that had a location in Switzerland, or Europe.

Now in the 2000s, the trend for some Bollywood movies is to have a good song or two in a famous Indian location, say at a fort or famous temple. It is said this is done to please the NRI audience, who are homesick and longing to see some shots of the motherland.

Here are couple more from some recent movies:

Mani Ratman film "Yuva" (youth) was shot in many different locations in Calcutta. They have great shots of the trolly, and the new bridge is almost one of the main characters of the movie.

In "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam", there are many shots of famous landmarks in Rajasthan.

In "Kisna", the new Subhash Ghai movie there are a bunch of shots from Himachal Pradesh, I was watch it with Bijapuri and he was naming spots off left and right that were locations in the movie.
