Punks for sure. There may be more bands of that name actually.

Somehow i think i heard a band was named Taj Mahal too, but not sure where they're based.
Old hippies I thought, the Italian site http://www.scaruffi.com/vol2/mahal.html seems to confirm this, + that they're still active (do a search on Taj Mahal discography).
*Whoops see Anonymous's post just above.

It appears that unsurprisingly Sun Ra did a track called India on his album Super Sonic Jazz, late fifties.

Yes but the phrase Indian Summer seems to be an American invention and connected to American Indians. See also World Wide Words. There's also the song "Ten Little Indians" of course

the ashram song, by lauren Hoffman in album meggido
the lyrics:
Swami G lay your hands on me,
That I might be healed,
Bring your light up close to me,
So that I might see.

Om Shanti Om Shanti Om Shanti Om,
Om Shanti Om Shanti Om Shanti Om.

Swami G i'm your devotee,
Won't you come to my room,
I'll make sacrifices dear,
Get me in with God.

Om Shanti Om Shanti Om Shanti Om,
Om Shanti Om Shanti Om Shanti Om.

Preacher, prophet deliver me,
I'm a sinful girl,
Can I buy back my chastity,
With these rubies and pearls.

Om Shanti Om Shanti Om Shanti Om,
Om Shanti Om Shanti Om Shanti Om.

Om Shanti Om Shanti Om Shanti Om,
Om Shanti Om Shanti Om Shanti Om

Don't think many of you will recall this one...
Bimbombay - Jimmy Rogers
This morning this tune just popped into my head for some reason and now I can't get rid of it - maybe I can leave it here...

Actually, Ashanti performs a music number in that Bride and Prejudice movie, she even sings parts of it in Hindi (I think). So there's your India connection!

ahaa, right on mate... but if she was to name herself in Hindi guess 'Shanti' would have been more 'peaceful'..
