India in English music - list.

Now that Joe Satriani will be visiting India (and Japan too...), it occurred to me that India in mentioned in quite a few of songs from non Indian bands...

Here's what I can think of:

1 - Kashmir, Led Zepplin.
2 - Taste of India, Aerosmith.
3 - Blood & Tears, Steve Vai
4 - Thank you India, Alanis Morissette. (sp?)
5 - Shanti Ashthangi, Madonna (now called Esther)
6 - Spoonman, Soundgarden.(All my friends are Indians, All my friends are brown and red.)
7 - Loosing my religion - REM

Add to the list, I just wanna know if there are more...

Off the top of my head:

John Coltrane -- "India."

Full albums:

Works by Alice Coltrane, including Journey in Satchidananda.
George Harrison -- Wonderwall Music.
Ry Cooder -- A Meeting by the River (with V.M. Bhatt so not precisely "Western" )

There must be zillions more.

"Hindi Sad Diamonds," from Moulin Rouge samples Alka Yagnik singing "Chamma, Chamma."

Yes maybe I was thinking of India-inspired albums too much. If you want to narrow it down to titles containing the word India it would surely keep this thread more manageable

Meanwhile, let's not forget Fleetwood Mac's "The Green Manalishi" (at least I always took it to be their misspelling of maharishi).

Lest I be confused for the old hippie that I not necessarily am, I was thinking of relevant punk songs but can't come up with anything in a jiffy. I don't suppose the Dead Kennedys' "Holiday in Cambodia" would qualify Beefeater has a song out called Satyagraha I think. There's a relatively new Dutch punk band called Shikari for that matter, they're pretty intense too.

The prospect of going through my whole music collection is a little daunting sorry.

I think Ashanti is a Rastafarian term actually, not sure what it refers to. I thought some Ethiopian tribe.

btw Speaking of which like many reggae songs there's a recurring theme being redone all the time called "Gunga Din", I've got a great instrumental version by Rico.

well ASHANTI in hindi means- disturbing or chaotic as "shanti" is peace and "A" addeded to it makes it its opposite, that is one without peace, but i was not aware of any ethopian reference would be pretty cool though....

Do a search on "ashanti wars", will give you plenty of hits. Looks like some African tribe. I don't know about this specific artist but I suspect some rasta connection. The artist being so popular it's difficult to do a search on "ashanti" per se.

Ah look http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashanti tells us a little more.

Both the Tragically Hip's "Music at Work" and REM's "Be Mine" mention the Ganges.

Also "Taj Mahal" by Sam Roberts, clearly.

If you want to go way back, Tommy Dorsey has an arrangement of an obscure tune called, "Song of India," which sounds a bit like a snake charmer.

Plus, Noel Coward's wicked, "Why do the Wrong People Travel (When the Right People Stay Back Home)?" asks:

What compulsion compels them
And who the hell tells them
To drag their bags to Zanzibar
Instead of staying quietly in Omaha?
The Taj Mahal
And the Grand Canal
And the sunny French Riviera
Would be less oppressed
If the Middle West
Would settle for somewhere rather nearer.

Yes but the musician Ashanti has has no India reference at all, for that matter neither does India.Arie.
Some crazy kids like me might take India to be part of the African continent.

Nirvana (one of my fav bands) didn't mention it ever either.. OMG they're using a country for marketing/publicity.

Yeah... thats a bulls eye, cos the original album was actually called 'Asian Moon'. For an India specific release the name was changed to Bombay Moon.

hmmm... I actually researched a bit on every mention above and Phillip Glass's I found very interesting.

His web site says:
Quote:
In Paris, he was hired by a filmmaker to transcribe the Indian music of Ravi Shankar into notation readable to western musicians. In the process, he discovered the techniques of Indian music. After researching music in North Africa, India and the Himalayas, he returned to New York, renouncing his previous music, and applying eastern techniques to his own work.
Many of those mentioned i've not heard, cant even get to dowbload them...

But thanks to everyone for sharing the information.

Edit: spell error.
