India & Beyond Video

Hi IMers

Came across this excellent clip on YouTube that explores Indian and Western spirituality. The presenter really captures some of the intensity of India.

I am sorry, but the clip has very little about "Indian spiritualiy" -- its more about hindu rituals, and an emotional filmaker.

You can find spirituality in everything if you look hard enough

India can be tremendously satisfying for the self-absorbed.

"there's nothing here you know, nothing here, except me, and myself, and there's no going away from that."

you said it sister.

hmmmm....I hope she did not wind up going bonkers, it looked like she was on the verge of it....

as for the yoga class she filmed, I wouldn't let a teacher who does not know me pull on my body like that dude she filmed....that's a good way to get hurt.....

She was affected in one scene by the continuous procession of burning bodies, it can happen to anyone.

This teacher is one of the well known BKS Iyengar teachers in Mumbai... my nephew has trained with him for two years... he would not do such [pulling and so on] to new students.... as far as I know. The BKS Iyengar style is characterised by ropes and props being freely used to correct physical deformities or stiffness. I agree that it may result in a muscle sprain if overdone [it has happened]

Today most people [Indian & Foreign] do Yoga for physical effects/corrections or as a medical therapy rather than as a way to become ONE. Sad but True.

I agree with your comments totally, but the teacher here at least is not bad and his style merely reflects our society today. Non BKS teachers have criticized the BKS style as circus acrobatics... maybe true.... but he has contributed a very great deal to the spread of Yoga in the international arena.

Personally i am not a follower of the BKS style, but still respect him for whatever he has achieved.

and one does not have to view burning bodies for India to affect them, as I remember one student at KYM during my first trip who had to be sent home by the American Embassy -- mental meltdown.

I've done a class myself using the ropes, etc. so I am very familiar...but I never let a teacher "adjust" me because they don't know my body. A teacher who knows me well, fine, but someone who does not, never....

you're preaching to the choir, Avid, as we say here....and you know that I know that's true....which is why I decided against getting "certified" as a "yoga therapist" because to me all yoga is "yoga therapy" if applied correctly...as Sri Krishnamacharya taught....

one of my teachers refers to it as "Bondage Yoga" because of the ropes and using straps to tie the legs and arms for certain asanas...

She seems like a bit of an upper class twit to me - but I do have a question - should she have filmed the burning of the bodies? Isn't that a no-no... If she is so in awe of Indian Spirituality surely she should show a little more respect?
