if u could pick 4 movies...
on our local university campus we're putting together an indian film festival to make americans more aware of indian culture...
we're trying to decide which movies will make the final cut... so if you could pick 4 indian movies that you think are very well made and acurately reflect indian culture, which ones would you recommend?? |

"Satya" for underworld culture, "Swades" for village life, "Lajja" for the plight of women; and "Kathaa" for a tongue-in-cheek look at chawl life in India.

from all time classics, i would take -
Do Beegha Zameen - for the true depiction of rural india. Hum Aapke hain kaun - No better movie than this to show the "great indian wedding" Guide - The transition of a man from a guide - lover - liar/greedy - monk. Upkar - One of the better movies of manoj kumar. Cult classic highlighting the contrast between Indian and Western values in the newly independent state |

Though difficult would attempt it :-
1. Sholay :- It's what made Mr. Amitabh Bachhan but also shows male-bonding in its entirety. 2. Hum Dil De chuke Sanam :- a romantic drama. Women will love this. Beautiful songs. 3.Kranti Manoj Kumar's :- A film which shows the freedom movement. 4. Munnabhai M.B.B.S. :- A rib-tickling comedy showing a mumbai gangster trying to turn into a doctor. Lots of situational as well as lyrics-based comic. It tells about the underbelly but not cut & dried as 'Satya' is. |

certainly, the list is as exhaustive as there are tastes.
i am not that up on indian film, though i've seen several. a typical bollywood film seems a must to introduce films that break out in song and dance all over the movie, but the serious ones really stand out as memorable for me. i like "Earth" for the historical issue of the partition. "Bombay" is another one that i especially like. I recently saw "Raincoat" and really liked the serious tone of the issue of arranged marriages. Bollywood films always have a happy ending in this prevalent them, though it seems that this is more myth than reality.

I liked Salaam Bombay - early Mira Nair film set in the slums of Mumbai focusing on the world of street kids, drug dealers and prostitutes....very gritty and a far cry from Bollywood.

An Indian list would differ from that of a foren in that there is no nautch and songs in "better" films. However, this would depend on whether one was speaking of the crowd at the film school in Pune and the Bengali population or the masses (source: spouse)..
