A good free website

http://www.ispeakhindi.com/ has good free daily lessons with audio. Here is a sample.
“na-ma-ste” (नमस्ते) can be used to greet someone. It is very similar to “hello” in English (though you will find “Hello” is common among Hindi speakers as well.) It can also be used when parting, though other phrases are common for that as well “See you soon” which are covered in other sessions.

नमस्ते is made of 3 groups of letters. Let us go over each one:

न – na

म – ma

स्ते which in itself is a combination of 3 characters. स (sa) + त (ta) + ए (e). It is actually a “half” स (sa) because the vowel part gets dropped and combined with the next letter त (ta) to make a “sta” स्त and finally that “a” अ is dropped at the end and replaced with an “e” ए.

Remember to say “na-ma-ste” (नमस्ते) to people you meet.

Hello,

I liked the "Teach yourself Hindi" also. Good thing can be to couple it with the "Teach yourself Urdu", as they are basically the same language. Combining these two will, I feel, give you a wider understanding of the language. And if you don't want to bother with the alphabets, you can read the transcript only.

For French-speakers: the "Assimil" in Hindi is very good, no need to learn the script there.
Also: "Parlons Hindi", éd. L'Harmattan, aut: Joshi & Montaut

Introduction to Hindi Grammar - Paperback (July 1, 1995) by Usha R. Jain

For purely grammar only, this is the best book. There is another grammar book in the series and one reader. It is simple, concise and thorough.

For hearing Hindi sounds, I found www.anu.edu.au/asianstudies/hindi/ useful.

And for the script, Teach Yourself Beginner's Hindi Script is invaluable.
