Hindi music

Does anyone know of good sites where I can download MP3s of current Hindi music from soundtracks? We're preparing for a trip and would like to know a little more about Bollywood movie music.

Incidentally, does anyone know who the female singer is that does the cover of Nusrat Fateh Ali's song Mast Qalander?

You are right about old and new being relative terms.

By the same token, what one considers crap is also relative. I'm sure the majority of Bollywood music lovers will not consider music from Umrao Jaan, Qurbani, Bazaar, Karz, Kudrat, Saagar, Ram Teri Ganga Maili, Henna, Silsila, Aap To Aise Na The, 1942-A love story, Chandni, Lamhe, etc. - all released in the 80s - as crap !!!

Nobody mentioned Kazaa yet? - Excellent source for Indian music. For online radio stations use a program like TotalRecorder (shareware version available) to record and convert automatically to mp3.

It is disgusting to hear Lata's playback for heroines less than half her age and
its high time she retires!!

I was referring to the movie "1942- A Love Story" which had great songs and which I thought was released in 1989 and hence included it as a 80s movie. I may be mistaken. Sorry !

The movie of the early 80s was "Love Story", which also had good songs and believe me, those topped the popularity charts for quite some time ! I was a college student in Mumbai in those days and clearly remember the same. No offence meant meera, but you may not be able to digest this, as you weren't even born then !!

I believe the answer to part B of the question is Abida Parveen.

Bollywood for dummies

I asked a room mate of mine what on earth these colourful records were , it was like he had waited all his life to explain me , he pulled out a record mind you that this is about 15 years back , and started to explain , this Dennis he said is the sound track of one of the best movies , it was about a boy in love , he escaped together with his brothers to visit the girl , during this escape from home they sang wild songs about love and almost got in serious trouble , my roommate knew every word , he sat on the bed like he was driving the car in the movie packed with curious brothers and while the song played he shouted the exact words of the songs , all the while he never stopped explaining what part the movie was in, there was so much joy in all of this that I understood that Bollywood movies are more then just theatre on screen .

I like http://www.ujala.nl for listening to Hindi sound , funny enough I did not listen to hindi music while in India , it was to loud, and there was never one single source of sound , makes it hard to listen

My audio card came with a software called Creative Recorder which can create WAV files of any sound that comes out of the audio card. I have burnt CDs off streaming music from raaga.com (after turning off all other system sounds and running programs). It works great and the sound is crystal clear!! I then convert the WAV files to MP3 files to save disk space
