Thumbs up Hand to Mouth to India - by Tom Thumb

I came across this guy's website - Tom Thumb- and he absolutely amazed me! He is the craziest traveler ever.

Take a look at his website and you can also read on-line his books, but one of them he actually published: 'Hand to Mouth to India,' is his story of hitchinking to India with no money.

I can guarantee you, you will not be bored spending some time on his website:

you guys should read up his website.

I'm going to get fired. I've been reading the Jail Stories on this site and have gone thru chapters 1 - 12 and there are still 2 to go. What this guy hasn't done isn't worth doing. Awesome reading!!!! Give it a go.

I read "Hand to Mouth" about a year ago.

Funny thing is that I can't remember a single episode in the book other than it was about a guy who travelled with no money across countries like Pakistan.

Actually I can remember one thing - I think he played the clarinet. Must've been that scruffy hippy looking clarinetist I once met in Pushkar. He played well but only knew one tune.

I didn't enjoy the book. I felt it was more an invented adventure book subject rather than a genuine book about an adventure, a sort of "Round Ireland with a Fridge" with spice, dirt and desparation.

It's on my shelf and if anyone sends me the postage they can have it!

Even if it was an invented story........the jail stories were pretty descriptive as well as being horrendous. His description of Delhi was pretty good too.

Ah well.........to each his own. We don't get much reading matter here, so maybe we don't know any better.

No no no I am not saying he (Tom Thumb) didn't do the trip. I just think the feat of that journey and the writing a book about it was all a bit contrived.

As if the trip was made to write a book and make money rather than to take such an unwise trip for its own sake and not get something out of it in the long term.

Contrived is a better word than invented in this context ... sorry.

I was just ego-surfing a little bit and found this thread and it made my day. Great to know some are enjoying the stories.
I loved rab's post too. He assumed it was all some big publicity stunt to make money. Firstly, just coz a book is published doesn;t mean the author made shit from it. Secondly, i was in india for a year and a half afterwards with no money and no visa. Writing the book and selling copies of it was means to stay alive.
It's not the greatest book in the world though, i was only 20 when i wrote it and was a little too sure about a lot of stuff.
If anyone's interested they can see what I'm up to these days and check out www.roadjunky.com where there's also an india and goa guide.

Going through your new site, you still are too sure about a lot of stuff. But then, you've travelled far more than I ever will, so there.
