Hair cut ceremony
In March we stayed in Jodhpur in the Durag Niwas Guesthouse. Govind, the owner, told us that he and his family went to the village of his ancestors for the first hair cut ceremony of his son. We as guests were invited to join them. Four of us went for a great trip to the Thar Desert where we stayed for two nights.
One of our fellow guest made this wonderfull slide show of it. http://www.catvibe.com/Multimedia%20...62CD54F8F.html |

What does aanvullen mean, Dhans? Congratulations for your son's haircut, desertrose. I might add I recently visited Durag Niwas and everything including bathrooms was spotlessly clean and fresh with a new very welcoming entrance. Take a look at Mr Camel picture in desertrose's picture gallery - he has done some nice stuff with blue colour!

I would just like to correct the above link. It should be:
http://durag-niwas.blogspot.com/ Also, that is an interesting account. Not very often does one read from the perspective of a host. Those "tourists" sound horrible! I met and heard of bad tourists, but this was beyond anything one can call a "bad tourist". Sympathies with you! |

Appalling ... other travellers should intervene and stand up for the poor propietors. I have done this myself when a certain type of aggressive and scheming traveller (often of a particular nationality) treats Indians like crap. Disgusting behaviour ... they deserve a good beating.

Don't worry Desert Rose - Word of mouth on something like IM is probably equally as good for a small guest house as LP - I know that I have checked every place to stay on IM before booking and not just taken the LP recommendation. Also, LP are not stupid, they wouldn't act unless they had a LOT of bad recommendations from people, they know that there are people who are NEVER happy!
People like that are unfortunately around - we just have to take a deep breath and hope that their karma catches them in a very unpleasant way. In fact, they probably have an awful time wherever they go as they upset everyone and everyone hates them - I would feel free to kick someone like that out of my place, its not like you're a big hotel, more of a family homestay... and Brisso is right, its up to other travellers to intervene in situations like this, not just put our heads down and look the other way.. |

Sorry to hear about encounter. For what is worth, my friend whom she stayed at your guesthouse just under a year go enjoyed your hospitality very much!
Horror-guest stories do come up from time to time. The worst that I've witnessed was this single guy travelling with a driver/car, whom both of them were getting drunk together, along with huffing and puffing the night away - if you get my drift. The owner told us the reason why he welcomed the guy to his home was because he knew one of the familes (excellent guests) that stayed at the g/h prior. On the third night, (leaving early next morning) he refused to settle the bill because "...I was treated badly by the locals. Isn't it the Indian custom that all guests should be treated like royality so I don't have to pay..." With that, he walked into the room, picked up his bags (and his driver) and marched towards the front door, saying "I dare you to stop me. I'll tell everyone not to come and they'll believe me because I'm a foreigner." His driver was too drunk and high to drive so he decided to take the wheel, not in any better shape himself. The owner tried to stop and warn him about driving at night in India and in return he got punched in the stomach and drove off, with his driver half asleep, slumped on the passenger side. Not 5 mins later all of us in the guesthouse heard a loud THUD...The guy came limping back into the guesthouse, cursing and crying... The moral of the story: karma. So DesertRose, please try not to be upset by stupid people/tourists. They deserve what they get, one way of the other. P.S. The guy and his driver were fine. They stayed the night, nursed their hang over and they drove off early in the morning - still without paying the bill. |

This morning Mr.Beamont, from UK,left for Udaipur via Ranakpur and Kumbalgarh, which he didnt go in the end, he was not even staying at our guest house, he and his was staying at Hotel Ajit Bhawan . Mr.Beamont found our number and booked our Car to Udaipur for 5 rps a Km Air con included toll, parking ,taxes etc Via Ranakpur. usualy a car's minimum running of the day is 300km,when the taxi is used for dropping at the destination only then client have to pay for its way back also. If you go to kumbagarh it is usualy more then 300km then, the extra each kilometer is charged extra, but on the way back driver doesnt go to kumbalgarh so you dont pay for the extra kilometers. Mr.Beamont agreed upon this. Now he is calling from Udaipur saying he does not want to pay for the car air con on the way back because the driver wont be using the air con. well one have to pay for the car air con price when its booked on air con price way in or out and it is upto the driver if he uses the air con or not on his way back. Mr.Beamont in udaipur is not paying our driver now and making big drama out of the scene in front of his hotel. Driver does not speak much english and he is calling me to solve the problem, i dont know what to do sitting 300km away. These experiances are making me shut down the guest house and convert it into a boarding for school children.
I had to be rude to the client on phone , I told him i will get his PassPort number from Ajit Bhawan and tell police about the incident. I told him you can not do this to me. I am not taking it any more. Good news Aishah ,The driver is finally paid just now . |

Awful story, Percy! One of my worst observations where I really cringed was watching an obnoxious fellow wolf down his food - we were all sitting around a garden beside a pool in Pushkar and he was with a group of other equally disrespectful people - then complain bitterly that it was no good and refused to pay for it. The thing that upset me was the 'waiter' had really worked hard that day, he suffered a terrible leg problem but uncomplainingly
brought the food out walking all over the place with difficulty. From staying there on previous visits I knew him well and he is a very nice man - he was the butt of this obnoxious person's abuse. The rest of the 'friends' joined in, packed up their stuff and left without any payment. It was horrible. Just read your post, desertrose.. it never seems to stop does it? You know the difference between non a/c or a/c is only about 1 rupee - he already has a very cheap rate for a/c I don't know what he is complaining about! You don't want to know these people do you?? "...does not want to pay for the car air con on the way back because the driver wont be using the air con..." That's ridiculous! It's like saying I'd only pay for half of a burger that I ordered because I only ate half...
I wonder why people travel all the way to India only to be nasty - why not just be nasty at home and save yourself the travelling costs? Yes DesertRose, turning your guesthouse into a children's boarding school is a great idea - dealing with immature guests with worse than child-like behaviour will certainly help you to cope with the demands of nuturing real kids... Aishah: I've heard worse stories believe it or not... Disrepectful travellers don't know/care the impact that they have on the next traveller. DesertRose is now having second thoughts (though I am that's just a joke - I hope!) and put it this way - I was travelling alone in India and many times inapproriate advances were made towards me. As I discussed this with guesthouse owners/locals/fellow like-minded travelers, thinking that I HAD DONE something to encourage this behaviour, they said that it's the legacy of one 'loose' foreigner that they encountered so they think others (with what they perceived as similar background and personality) are like that... |

Sometimes I am really surprised if these people come to India for the attributes and values OR simply for value for money as a cheap holiday option, with a lot on offer...
Desertrose, I understand that you are in hospitality business and all, but sometimes you need to take a tough stance...just remember you have a business to run..and that is the first priority... I am a baniya, being an Indian I hope you understant what I mean ...just follow a simple principle, do not fleece anyone Or cheat anyone but also ensure that you are not taken undue advantage off...try to improve with all these experiences...insist on advance payment, send the cab after getting a receipt with terms and conditions signed etc...I am sure you must be aware about these things...but for that you have to get your house in order first.. ![]() |
