all the guidebooks are more or less the same, i personnaly prefer lonely planet. but, you will probibly find yourself using the guidebook less and less as you grow more confident.

i would just stick to the one book if i were you, anything you need to know that is not in the book, you can always ask here and someone will probibly have the info you are looking for.

plus you can pick up more detailed information about any historic sites, such as khajuraho, at the place itself.

On my last trip I carted around both LP and Footprint - in reality you only need one
At first I was comfortable with the familiarility of the LP style but Footprint soon grew in favour, due to its more mature style. In comparison LP seems like a comic book at times.
Main downside with Footprint is the small print (not easy to read on the top bunk of the Amritsar Mail) and interestingly there are differences in detail/factual information between the two guides.

why not just check it out of your local library and see if you really need it first (and you could always just photocopy bits of it)

i'm a bit tired of my footprint book- there are nearly always mistakes on the map and its getting quite annoying, (especially when you walk for 2km for a hotel and find it was 2km in another direction)- its seems a bit slack in places as if they haven't done their research properly. however many that have read LP too prefer footprints as it has more description of the off the beaten track places.

just one book is enough. you won't have the energy to lug around two or consult two (although footprint is interesting, lp is usually better allround)
have a good trip

I bought fottprint on my first trip...since everyone have lp. I am very happy with it and when I read in a lp I feel that the footprint cover more about the sights and information about things you want to explore. but yes...I also have discovered a few faults.

I borrowed the newest (2003) Rough Guide to India from my local library and was really happy that I didn't buy it! Though LP's maps are often innacurate, they at least have a map of most places -- Rough Guide does not, nor does it cover as many places. And it seemed like many areas had not been updated -- comparing it with the latest LP (2 years old), the prices were 'way lower, and that doesn't happen in real life.

Though it weighs a ton, I'll probably stick to the LP.

to anyone out there landing in mumbai and heading south from there........buy the south india lonely planet not the india one
i traded with people on my trip occasionally for an hour or so, and the south india<s.i.> one was more detailed on the states it did include, also it is lighter and thinner
people say to get the india version for future use in case u go to the north but i see it as if you can afford 60 000 rps for plane ticket u can spend 1200 rps. for a newly updated book
* in colaba i saw cheap used copies of l.p. s.i. and india on the causeway in used bookstores
my opinion of footprints and lets go, yeah they are good as well..............good to start a fire with if you are at a hill stn. and u get cold at night.that's what they are good for in my opinion
