Granada, Spain, June 13-20 2009: Film Festival: Little Zizou, Akasa Kusum, Ghajini

Cines Del Sur [Cinemas of the South] Festival in Granada - starts June 13

http://www.cinesdelsur.com/itinerarios.php

at least 3 Indian movies that I know or have seen:

Little Zizou
: it's about Parsis in Bombay, and has an all-Parsi cast.

It is such a charming movie (Boman Irani dancing to "Mambo Italiano" - how could it fail to charm?) - I've seen it twice and would go again. Sooni Taraporevala, the director, will be there for sure. She wrote the scripts for most of Mira Nair's movies.

As I recall it is more than 50% in English, so you'll understand it well even if subtitles are in Spanish (and if you don't speak Spanish!!).

Ghajini
stars Aamir Khan, who is a wonderful actor and Hindi cinema superstar. The starting point for the story is the American movie Memento, though I understand it's significantly different. It was very popular, but there is a lot of violence in it, which kept me from seeing it.

And Akasa Kusum -- I looove this movie. Set in Sri Lanka. It's in the category of "superior regional films" - it is a really well-put-together story about a retired film actress who lives quietly and modestly until a piece of her past re-surfaces. The movie is full of real and varied relationships among women, still a rare-ish kind of story on the big screen.

You also learn a lot about the strains on the quality of life in contemporary Sri Lanka.

a bit more about it here if you're interested: http://www.bollywhat-forum.com/index.php?topic=24659.0

I'd see it again in a flash.
