good reads

I'm looking for something to read that might give good detail as to what life and culture is like in India. I will be the first to admit I know very little, and the next best thing to experiencing it is finding a good enough read that feels as if the book has transported you there. I like to read all sorts of different things so whatever people can think of just pass on the suggestion.

A Suitable Boy would be good. It may not be set in the present day, but a lot of it is still very current, and it is a wonderful (and very long) book.

If you meant fiction, that is.

I recommend A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. Also, not set in present-day, but an excellent read. fiction

In Spite of the Gods by Edward Luce. non-fiction. An affectionate critique of India written by a Financial Times correspondent who lived here 24 years and married an Indian woman.

I've been readin Naipaul's A Million Mutinees Now. Also William Dalrymple's worth a read - especially City of Dijins. Also check out his website for a sample of his new book out in October. williamdalrymple.com

'A Strange and Sublime Address' by Amit Chaudhuri; a gentle book of everyday life in Calcutta. Beautifully written and almost poetic.
