My copy of Ginsberg's Indian Diaries is one of my most treasured books. It's a portrait of India as seen by a truly unique individual -- and if his view doesn't always agree with mine, that's okay. Your view of India probably isn't the same as mine, either.

Allen Ginsberg 1926 - 1997

American poet and diarist he was involved in the beat generation literary movement, that burst into prominence in the 1950s, and great friends burroughs and Kerouac.....The Book itself is collection of diary entries, pieces of poems and personal reflections. The conditions on the streets of Calcutta, Bombay, and other Indian cities are presented in stark clarity and i highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Allen Ginsberg, the Beats, Poetry, India, or the human spirit and it's compassionate nature.... Although in my opinion , not one of his best books it is still an important entry of his and indian life ....

Matt

If you enjoyed reading Allen Ginsberg's journal, try searching out Gary Snyder's (Japhy Ryder in Kerouac's "Dharma Bums") account of his travels in India at the same time. The copy I have was published by Grey Fox Press, San Francisco - ISBN 0-912516-80-1.
