Hotel Very Welcome
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0949423/ A very realistic (tragic) comedy about asia travellers and their reasons to flee from home. (Will be hard to get, it's an independent movie). Highly recommended. Synopsis: Trapped in transit between Washington, D.C. and Shanghai after a missed flight, Svenja (Svenja Steinfelder) begins an odd relationship from her Bangkok hotel room with the disembodied call center voice attempting to rebook her flight. Meanwhile, rave-surfing mates Josh (Ricky Champ) and Adam (Gareth Llewelyn) bicker over money and girls as they wander Thailand. In India, laidback Liam (Chris ODowd) tries mightily to escape his past. Finally, fragile Marion (Eva Loebau, star of The Forest for the Trees), eagerly partakes various self-help programs in the new age-y meditation center Happy Home, hoping to dull the pain of a disintegrating relationship. A crafty critique of anglo twentysomethings adrift in an Asia they mistakenly believe to be a cleansing pleasure palace. The Darjeeling Limited http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0838221/ A comedy mostly playing in a train running through rajastan. Really funny. |

The Bridge Over the River Kwai was actually filmed in Sri Lanka. The Painted Veil made me want to travel, except for the cholera bit.

Motorcycle Diaries does make one want to just jump on the bike and go travel around the world.
Forrest Gump didn't really want to make me travel, but it is an amazing movie! "run forrest....run!!"

two films by majid majidi:
baran and children of heaven. essentially about children in a day to day life in iran. the flip side of the coin to the usual tumultuous films one sees about iran. these films are about ordinary kids, in ordinary homes, coping with ordinary problems. horrendously refreshing portrayal of iranian life/landscape... one can empathise, laugh, cry and be enthused with the lifestyle. and then there are: roman holiday [ aah roma - and the buzz of two-wheelers ] under the tuscon sun [ mmm - tuscany lifestyle and landscape ] out of africa [ oh well - enough can never be said about the lands and travels on that continent ] and yea, most definitely - indiana jones - raiders of the lost ark + temple of doom!! :brishti |

Hindi popular movie ("Bollywood") - Bunty Aur Babli - two provincial young people set off to make their fortunes, not very legitimately, and there is lots of footage of travel throughout India. An entertaining comedy-romance-adventure movie that more or less rollicks along, starring two appealing young actors, Rani Mukherjee and Abhishek Bachchan. No violence, fine for family viewing.
Then - what about Easy Rider? very much of its time (the 60s? 70s?). |

Empire of the Sun: China at the time of the Japanese invasion, which I think was 1937. Well worth seeing.

How about a couple of Peter Weir films!
The Year of Living Dangerously has to get the juices flowing for any potential Southeast Asia traveller. Danger, historic happenings, romance with that kinda of Vangelis-esque synthesizer music to evoke that foreign or 'far from home' ambience. <Apparently banned from being shown in Indonesia until 1999 .... do some countries take the Silver Screen a bit too much for real!?> Also Witness (which recently came out wth a 20th anniversary DVD) is a lovely film with excellent cinematography of the Pennsylvania Amish country. Again danger, romance & an unexpected meeting of old and new worlds. |
