As devleenas suggests

"Motorcylce Diaries" infact both the book and the movie inspired me so much that within 7 days of watching the movie I purchased a bullet thunderbird and ventured into a solo Delhi - Leh bike trip :-)

I can't believe no one's mentioned "The Beach" with Leonardo Dicaprio.

Midnight Express is a good one too. Turkey, Hippie era, Airport, jail, escape, happy ending.

There was a TV serial directed for the Indian Railways by Shyam Benegal called 'Yatra' (Journey) late eghties. Does anyone remember that?

I'm not able find a good link right now, just references.

Also the scene in Gandhi where He is touring the country by rail ..... and the Ravi Shankar music is complimenting that travel feel very nicely.

How about Bhowani Junction -- especially that overcrowded train!

Lawrence of Arabia

- Blond Englishman travels to foreign lands and teams up with the locals to cause mayhem. Sounds familiar

- and for the Bollywood fans ..... Bombay to Bangkok

Himalaya: L'enfance d'un chef
by Eric Valli
Absolutely stunning views of mountains and village life, and trekking across them, risking death to get to market.
enough to make anyone want to go trekking in the himalaya.

La Piste
also by Valli but this time it's sand dunes, and you really want to go out into the open. great.

travellers and Magicians
khyentse Norbu
Another Himalay film, but this one, I have to say, even though it is in Bhutan, made me think so much of Himachal Pradesh, I felt terribly 'home sick' for the time i had spent there. It boosted me to search for my latest job opp in india, then I ended up in Knapur! not the himalay i know, but still a lot nearer than France!

Smile Where the hell is Matt?

It's not a movie, but a short 3 minutes and 42 seconds clip that every single time makes me wish i could just have enough money in my pockets to visit all these beautiful places.

The background music is sweet like honey, the landscapes are terrific... and Matt himself brings a smile to your heart with his funny lil' dance..
