I just saw Tibet: Cry of the Snow Lion yesterday at the cinema - I recommend this documentary to anyone who wants to understand what's been happening in Tibet since the Chinese invasion - also it explores Tibetan culture.

"We`re No Monks" - review

Phayul.com has posted a review , interesting not only for content - mentions some other films mentioned in this thread - but also for perspective , being written by a Tibetan in the West.

The scenes from Tibet are second-unit stuff *, to my understanding. The Tibetan vistas with actors were shot in the Andes , with a mixed set of Tibetan and Hmong as supporting actors and American yaks flown into Argentine on a chartered 747 . The original plan to shoot in Ladakh was scrapped after pressure on the Indian Gov`t.
But yes , the illusion is complete - a good proof of not only the Tibetan cultural specialists but also the feedback and critisism from the Tibetan actors. Orville Schell writes extensively from the set in "Virtual Tibet".

Kundun was shot in Morocco.

* Shot by Valle , director of Caravan and two stunning documentaries , mentioned earlier here.

Another good one!

A film by Lesley Ann Patten on Kyentse Norbu.

Funny and informative.

Catchy Soundtrack.

i agree with what volga_volga posted one and a half years ago. i think, thuogh, that the question of support for the tibetan freedom fight is connected with the kind of films that are produced on tibet: there is a rather romantic way to see and show life in tibet - which does not have to do so much with reality as it is and as it was. the only movie of all the ones mentioned i liked, was the saltman for its realistic approach.

Tibetan review of "Angry Monk"

Phayul has posted a review of "Angry Monk" - a film that should be interesting for anyone who is tired of the Western mytological view of Tibet.

yes!

that is a movie to watch for me, vistet. the sentence "Choephel became convinced that Tibet was in a womb of ignorance" written in phayul tells its own tale. the history o tibet is far more complex than its reflection in western media.

more on gedun choepel..

In India you can find a short biography on gedun choepel, by Irmgard Mengele, and a translation of his modern pilgrims handbook to India (with railway maps, a shared interest with steven ber ) , both published by Library of Tibetan Works & Archives.

Donald s Lopez has also just published a book on him : if it´s anywhere near his previous Prisoners of Shangri La ,it will be... really good.

Have seen both 'Windhorses' as well as 'Saltmen of Tibet' & enjoyed them thoroughly.'Samsara' seems to be quite a controversial movie, tried to get my hands on that one but wasn't able to see. Hopefully will get a copy the next time I visit Delhi/Dharamshala

Just finished seeing Giant Buddhas a 90 minute long documentary that vividly shows the importance the Bamiyan Buddhas had for the Afghanis, as well as placing them in a historical context.
Music by Philip Glass & Arvo Pärt.See it if you get the chance.

Recently saw a docu on Himalaya by Michael Palin-part 4 featured Tibet.
Lasha-its transformation into a modern city,its history,the Potala Palace....
Life of Tibetan nomads, fairs,Tibet's largest saltwater lake. And obviously the rugged terrain of "the Roof of the World"
An hour long docu-information+Palin's humour=enjoyable experience
