A movie that just opened here today, called OUTSOURCED (or something like that) was filmed in Mumbai.

Another vote for The River, 1951, in color, Jean Renoir - the first full-length feature filmed in India in color, and that was his intention. He uses India as background setting in a documentary way, so you see a lot of India just going on around the story.

Heat and Dust is nice, and it's worth mentioning that Shashi Kapoor, arguably India's handsomest screen presence (who acted in both Bollywood and non-Bollywood Indian movies, as well as many movies in English), has a major role.

If you decide to look in to Bollywood for movies with great footage of India, say so, there are many with great documentary moments going back 50 years, and also, in the current era, with great cinematography of locations all over India. (There are also of course the popular musical movies from the industries of the southern states, Madras in particular, that take you to those places.)

Just to add my 2 Rupees to this list :

Nocturne Indien is a film by Alain Corneau, adapted from a short story by Tabucchi, and starring Jean-Hugues Anglade (Betty Blue). Some was shot in Goa, some in... can't remember, was it Kolkata ? Beautiful thick slow film noir.

If you want to go back in time Fritz Lang's Bengal Tiger is a must-see. Shot entirely in studio, in Germany I think, but it's all about the effect of India on Westerners. A masterpiece, in my view.

I'd like to second the suggestion of Louis Malle's L'Inde Fantôme (Ghost India). That and Renoir's River are what first made me decide to go, when I was 10...

And for the fun of it, does anybody remember a TV series called Sandokan ? Must be about 30 yrs old. Memories of an Indian Robin Hood sailing his (pirate?) ship over dazzling blue seas, flashing incredible green eyes... Stop laughing, won't you, I was a kid, okay ? Loved the stuff.

When was Nocturne India made? I remember seeing Betty Blue in the theatre when it was first released, I think in the Mill Valley Film Festival in the 80's.

"The Drum" or "Drums" (1938) was partially shot in India(Chitral, J&K). It is a classic Korda(Zoltan) film that is shown occasionally on cable movie networks.
