I haven't seen it yet but a documentary called Born into Brothels. It is about children living in brothels.
saw it on tv here the other night - very good. it's about an american photographer who has been living in calcutta for several years, and her attempts to try to help some of the children living in a brothel. it's very straightforward, no sentimental tear jerking or judging of the people, and a few of the kids get opportuninities they would not otherwise have.
if you can get hold of a copy it's well worth it.

I really enjoyed a movie called Holy Smoke directed by Jane Campion (The Piano).A young Australian woman (Kate Winslet) is engrossed by a guru in an an Indian Ashram but is tricked into returning to Australia by her zenophpobic but well meaning family.

Upon return her family isolate her from society in a remote outback farmhouse with a professional deprogrammer (Harvey Keitel) and it becomes an intense battle of wits between the two main players with interludes of quirkiness courtesy of the various eccentric relations of Kate.

This movie is a bit of an enigma and some critics loved it and others hated it.The ending is a bit ordinary but I still think it is a brilliant movie thanks mainly to great performances from Kate and Harvey.

Our business was looking at hotel rates in Delhi and we were looking at staying long term at the Imperial Hotel in Delhi. So the manager was showing us the inns & outs of the place and I asked if they get any movie stars staying with them. Without hesitation he said yes quite regularly, infact kate Winslet just stayed with us while filming a movie (Holy Smoke?). I said Oh! show us that room if you don't mind! When he opened the door to the room, I with my suit on & brief case in hand - leaped onto the bed, stretched out and said " there! now I can say Kate Winslet & I slept in the same bed"!

Holy smoke, I saw that on BBC TV & went, WTF was that all about.

But then, I'm always cynical of the religion schtick in movies, so my views are coloured.

'Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World' has lots of Delhi (including Chandni Chowk and the Jama Masjid) and a bit of Agra (the Taj). But if you don't get Albert Brooks' very dry and weird sense of humor you probably won't really like this movie...

We have an IMAC movie about 45 min-hour long showing in our area now called "Mystic India". I intend to see it because it was highly recommend to me by someone who reviewed it. It's about an Indian's boy spiritual journey across different parts of India.

Heat & dust is OK. A merchant ivory film I think. can't remember the story too well but about a young modern english woman tracing the story of an raj ancestor who had an affair with a maharaj.

Ravi Shankar live 2xdvd. on one of the dvds is a documentary about Ravi and indian music. good old vintage footage too.

as for Indian films I recommend Mangal Pandey & Mother India.

on google video you can watch online -

I just watched "Looking for humour in the muslim world".
I loved it. Albert Brooks has a wonderful sence of humour.
Also Earth, Fire and Water were fantastic! Deepha Mehta is a genius.

I LOVED this video.....thanks Rich Anpoor.

I often feel starved to learn this historical stuff from India. Being a westerner, with a typical euro-centric education, this was very informative.

Yes this is an adaptation of the Herman Hesse's novel.

I enjoyed a lot a Deepa Mehta's film titled Water. Salaam Bombay! and Ayurveda: the art of being are also interesting movies.

india in the movies

forgive me if this has been done already, or i'm boring you.

but we were watching the Bourne Supremacy a few weeks ago and he was in Goa, when i noticed they were on Palolem Beach, which we visited and i recognised from the island at the north end of the beach he was going for a run along in the movie.

are there any other popular movies that shot on location in india? (obviously there are)

there's octopussy in udaipur and the new owen wilson film Darjeeling Limited.
