Does Louis Malle's "Phantom India" count? It was a multi-part series made for TV, I believe, but when I saw it in the mid '70's, it was being shown as a series of films. It blew me away.

How about The Man Who Would Be King - set in India, but could have been shot in Morocco and on a backlot for all I know. Anyway, it's a fabulous John Huston film based on a Kipling story .

Someone mentioned James Ivory - a '69 film of his called "The Guru" (no similarity to the recent Jim Mistry film of the same name) has some nice Varanasi location shots...

Are these two available on video or DVD?

Both The Jewel in the Crown and Staying On are available on video and DVD. Check the amazon.com or amazon.co.uk website, or other websites that sell videos.

Kama Sutra is a fabulous film in terms of scenery and interior design. Storyline too. In fact, if you aren't overly sensitive about naked people, it cannot be missed. It was artistic, not grotesque like pornography. I'd see this film if you intend on checking out khajuraho. Not because there are explicit carvings, but because there are carvings in a similar style portrayed in the movie. The love interest in the movie was a professional carver of that century.
I didn't like much "City of Joy", maybe because I had read the book before. I thought that the book was a good portrait of slums, although it wasn't good literature.

I saw Kama Sutra last year, before going to India and I didn't like it much. Never thought of it as being inspired on the Khajuraho carvings, but after having visited them I'll try to watch it again and maybe I'd like it better.

Vanity Fair. It shows a bit of India at the ending--not much, though, but I think part of it set in Britain was actually filmed in India, too.

If you don't mind older films there's a famous French film called "The River" that was shot entirely on location in India in 1951.Directed by Jean Renoir(the artist's son). Also there was a film from the early sixties that was shot at least partly in India called "nine hours to rama" that deals with Ghandi's murder by following the assassin up to the fateful moment.I saw this film once in the sixties and never again.Don't know if it's been released on DVD.I also remember an obscure tearjerker of a movie set in India called"the rains of ranchipur".Don't know if this was actually filmed in India or on a studio backlot but Richard Burton plays an Indian in it.

There were 2 movies which I liked which were foreign but had something indian in them.
The first one was an Iranian/Israeli movie about a couple who meet after years. Lot of family drama & as we delve into the present/past it becomes clear that the couple loved the movie 'Awara' a great classic & their life also has similar threads.
The second movie was about middle-aged parents who want to search for their girl who's somewhere in India & they come to know she's sick & has malaria or something. For this they ask for a young Doctor who's enchanted by the Mrs. comes with them. Over the course of the movie they see india, fall into love & have an affair. It has some very nice shots of Varanasi. Late to early 80's I think. After many a twists & tale he falls in love with another woman & goes back to New York/States. It was a nice love story. They were nice.

The River

Just wanted to third the suggestion of The River. I think it recently came out in cleaned-up DVD version.

Yes John I got a very clear & crisp version of River recently. Satyajit Ray had been with the crew & Bansi Chandragupta who was the set designer for Ray's films till his demise also did the job for River. It may be a bit off topic(actually not) Titash ekti nadeer nam(Titash is the name of a river) by Ritwick Ghatak has fantastic visulas of river, nature shot in Bangladesh which was once a part of India.
For movie lovers I strongly recommend Ritwick Ghatks' films like Subornorekha, Ajantrik(non mechanical), Megh e dhaka tara(stars obscured by clouds) & Titash ekti nadir nam.
