My all time fave book is ON THE ROAD by Jack Kerouac. Nothing beats that. I'm majorly into beat literature.

We Indians by Kushwnt Sing (It make me glee, introspect and at times feel sad, all in one small book. Who said he is a dirty man. The old Sardar is perfectly sharp and knows what he is talking)
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy ( Wow. I can’t believe this writing. Tolstoy is not telling a story to the readers. He is just taking the readers to the place the story is happening. Allowing people to eavesdrop at others conversations. Tolstoy is not a human being ) India Unbound by Gurucharandas (A book that has to be made as a textbook in Indian schools. A book that has to be made a ‘force read’ for the people in this country who are sarcastic and skeptical about their motherland) The Ramayana for children by Bulbul Sharma (Yes! This storybook with pictures keeps me young) Midnights Children by Salman Rushdie (Sorry, I could not read more than 10 pages of this book. Everyone is saying wow about this book (both here and my peers). Though I have the advantage of relating the locations in Mumbai, I find this as a difficult read for me. May be something is wrong with my taste) |

I'm glad to see that there are other Master and Margarita fans around. I think I've read it at least three times so far, and I know there is more to come.
How nice also to find fans of Slocum and the Hiscocks! I never went further than accross the English channel and the North Sea, but these werre the books that inspired my dreams of sailing, and taught me what to do when I did finally set foot on a boat.

Master and Margarita is being made into a movie in Russia (10 parts or so!). Not the first time: apparently every time someone attempted to make a M&M movie some mysterious mischief happened and prevented it.
beach, are you saying that Midnight's Children has become your fav book even after only 10 pages that you managed to read? btw I'd take Rushdie over Tolstoy any time ![]() PS for Bulgakov's fans I strongly recommend Dog's Heart that is as deep, satirical, witty and melancholic as it is political. No love story though...

I fiinally got around to reading Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy over the New Year and it was as incredible as reading Tolkein, Harry Potter etc for the first time. Technically for children but like J K Rowling, Tolkein, etc appeals to adults as well. On my desert island books reads list.
