Fascinating TV-show on remote tribes

Has anyone watched "Tribe" with expeditioner Bruce Parry?

This guy really jumps into the deep end as he goes and lives with some of the most remote tribes on the planet. And he's not afraid of participating in some seriously painful and frightening rituals, such as having his penis pushed back into his body or taking hallucinogenic drugs for hours on end. Which all makes for some damn good tv, done as culturally sensitively as possible.

In one of the episodes he stayed with a tribe in Arunachal Pradesh that (supposedly) hadn't seen a white man for generations.

Other than being outright entertaining in a strange way, it raises some mind-boggling questions over how similar/different we are as human beings. If you get a chance to watch it, do!

Read an interview with Bruce Parry and intro to the show here:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main...3/ftribe03.xml

This should probably go into a separate thread but this caught my eye.

and remains grateful to his parents because "they forfeited all their savings to put us in school. I thank them for that massively; it was very generous and loving of them.

erm...Dont parents do that in the normal course of events? short of being financially knackered? I ASSUME, parents are the same all over the world, that they'd want the best things for their kids.

Of course, I understand the 'independance' bit instilled in kids over there which is way more than Asian(note I'ms ticking to what I know here) societies but obviously you can amplify that independance by actually doing something, by giving them a good education.

By independance, I assumed that parents allowed kids to make their own choices at every appropriate age, not independant of a means to fund their education.

I don't quite get why the person thanked or even phrased it that way. Unless, he really meant that they quite bankrupted their retirement life so that the kids have a good schooling.

Most parents help out their kids, yes. Still something to be thankful for, no? Taking things for granted (especially from your parents) is the "normal course of events", unfortunately! He's actually saying thank you, which I think is nice. But this is off topic anyway.

Hippie, maybe this particular village hadn't seen a white man in living memory. Surely there are many... Oh well, slight dramatization suits these kinds of programs...
