FAME movie theaters - unethical practices - boycott brewing?

On a website by and for Indian film buffs - industry people (directors etc) as well as fans - there's a lot of talk right now about this practice that some theatre owners in India have -- they cancel scheduled shows when they haven't sold enough tickets, or when they claim they haven't.

Website = Passion For Cinema, a collection of blogs, articles, and discussion.

The director Anurag Kashyup has posted a strong article on the subject, and some strong discussion is going on. The main concern here is that small-budget and independent movies, even when they find a distributor, get no chance of being seen and building up an audience by word of mouth.

It sounds illegal to me - if it's not it ought to be, you'd think!!

Has anybody run into this anyplace else in the world? in the US of course if it's scheduled, it's shown - I've been to the movies hundreds of times as part of a tiny audience.

Note if you're an anti-Bollywood person (I'm not, I love it all, high/low, big/small, Bombay-made/regionally-made) -- this isn't "Bollywood" we're talking about, it's more like "everything else."

If Satyajit Ray were alive, we'd be talking about him.

Anyhow check out the article and add your two cents if you feel like it.

Seems that Anurag Kashyup's publicized complaint has done some good - here's a good article in Mid-Day (a Bombay newspaper) about the situation.

Where's the beer in this thread? The title promised beer, or a lack thereof.
