Has anyone noticed that weekends on TV are intentionally kept dull; there are no sensational disclosures, no political news, and no andolans. The juicy items that keep you glued to the tiny screen are reserved for the weekdays because they involve people who make the news and the team that covers their antics. Both need to recoup their energies at regular intervals, hence weekends are out of bounds for them. Their activities are invariably designed to fit into the general time table of the viewer. Except for events that begin in the course of the week and get carried forward over the weekend – events like chariot marches or fast-unto-death affairs that can rouse passions to explosion point. Also in this category fall calamities like major accidents or disasters or explosions that not only claim innocent lives but also have potentials of creating rift between different groups of people. In short, what can be controlled happens during the week and the unplanned ones on weekends.
In order to hold the attention of the viewers and to ensure that sponsors get their dues, we are treated, on weekends, to repeat telecast of old news packages, and awards functions; we have weekly face-offs, rerun of films where even the kids know by heart the dialogues of the villains and Culinary delights on offer by chefs of reputed Hotels assisted admirably by young ladies who take more care of their appearances and makeup rather than the hi-fi kitchen replete with all the modern gadgets. In short, weekend on the TV is not worth the wait except when there is an ODI in progress involving our very own and exclusive IIT, a new acronym for the Invincible Indian Team; or when a beauty pageant is on the cards where one of our girls is a participant; or, when the general elections are in progress to decide who enters the portals of Parliament. Therefore, leave the couch on normal weekends and move out to enjoy the fresh air, meet relatives and stoke up old dormant fires of friendship.
